Gael is thought of by many as a leading authority on the hammer dulcimer and bowed psaltery having explored and taught these two ancient instruments for almost a decade. Tom has been playing finger style guitar for over 20 y ears and is thought of as one of the states leading practitioners of this style. The instruments are as fascinating to see as they are to hear. The hammer dulcimer is a trapezoidal shaped instrument 62-stri- struck with small wooden mallets. The bowed psaltery is triangular in shape with 22 strings and is played with a small horse hair bow. Gael and Tom recently provided stickin'toit." The album includes several dance tunes and several ballads, including the melancholy, beautiful "Little Rock." This song offers a memorable melody and the musical interludes for the BYU production of "The Merry Wives of Windsor." They were involved in the recently released WordPerfect 6.0 CD and were featured on the soundtrack for the award win- ning Steve Olpin documentary film, "A Potter's Meal," which is based on Spring City potter Joe Bennion. Gael and Tom have released a - del's oratorio, "Judas Macca-baeus- ," on Wednesday, March I6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Provo Tab- ernacle. Handel has been called the greatest writer of epic oratorios. His two most famous are "Judas Maccabeus" and "Messiah." Each December the Utah Valley Choral Society provides an opportunity for members of the community to sing the beloved choruses of the "Messiah" when they sponsor their annual Messiah Sing-IThis concert will feature the n. more than one hundred singers of the choir performing Handel's choruses with the tone quality and musical skill for which they have been acclaimed. The choir and orchestra will be conducted by Louis Johnson, well known conductor, singer, and teacher. Soloists will include, Aria Wilding, Rita Felt, James Wilding, and Michael Raddatz. "Judas Maccabaeus" is based on the story of the devout Israeli leader who, in I67 B.C., led the s. Jews against the armies of the oppressive king of Syr Anti-ochu- highly regarded Celtic album, "A'Shearin," featuring the full range of their instruments and in 1992 Tom released a companion set of two albums, "Lizard Tales" (guitar instrumental s) and "People Tales" (original songs). Tom was also featured on the newly released Folk Utah album project which is a collection of select Utah sinaer ia. This war and its aftermath are the basis for the Jewish holiday of Hannukah. "Messiah" fans will likely feel acquainted with "Judas Maccabaeus" as they recognize Handel's familiar musical style. Listeners may be uplifted and inspired by the oratorio's affirmation of faith, courage and religious freedom. The popular entertainer, known for smashing watermelons and showing audiences his inventions, sold out five shows at the comedy club in October. Johnny B's is located at 177 W. 300 South in Provo. Shows will begin at 7:30 and 9:30 each evening and reservations will not be accepted. Those with tickets may exchange them for tickets to any Tuesday or Wednesday show at the place where they were purchased. "Provo is a great place to per-- . form," Gallagher said. "I don't particularly care for performing in clubs anymore, but this is a great room and the people are so attentive and responsive." Gallagher now performs mostly at conventions in large hotel ballrooms and venues that hold over 1,000 people. "The Gallagher shows in October were everything we hoped for and more. He really had a great time during his stay," said Terry Taylor, Johnny B's club manager. After his last Provo appearances, Gallagher stayed in the area for three more days and returned two weeks later to enjoy the sights and skiing in Utah. "If you have never been to my club, come see Ron Gallagher," says Johnny Biscuit, club owner. "I will be hosting what I think will be some of the best shows that will be seen at Johnny B's.
