Contractors, who use various types of finishes including epoxies, acrylics and urethanes, are listed in the Yellow Pages under Bathtubs & Sinks Repairing & Refinishing. The finishes, which come in many colors, are basically paint and are subject to paint problems such as peeling. Refinishing, including drying time, can put a tub out of service for a couple of days. Homeowners who have a tub refinished should be sure to obtain a written warranty against peeling and other finwarish failures. It is extremely important to carefully follow directions for cleaning the tub and applying the finish. Water seeps from a fit- ting in one of our plastic water pipes. Is there an easy way to repair this? A. I recommend Plumber's Goop, an adhesive and sealant that I've used several times to successfully stop seepage. Plumber's Goop comes in tubes and is sold at some home centers. Goop is applied to a leak in much the same manner as caulk. Turn the water off to the leaking pipe, dry the area around the fitting, and apply a coat of Goop. Let the sealer dry overnight, longer if possible, before turning the water back on. Read and follow other directions and cautions on the container. Needs an adjustment Our toilet makes a noise. Toilets often make a hissing or whistling noise when the refill valve, which refills the tank after a flush, fails to shut off. The noise results when water continues to run into the bowl. A great deal of water can be wasted. Some toilets have a floating ball at the end of a long rod. This mechanism is supposed to shut off the refill valve when the ball reaches a certain level. To shut off the water sooner, close the water-supplvalve, remove the tank lid, and bend the rod downward slightly so the ball does not rise as high y in the tank. If the toilet has a float that slides up and down a shaft at the left of the tank, reduce the float's upward travel slightly by adjusting the clip on the side of the mechanism. The toilet tank should stop filling when the water level is inch from the about one-hal- f top of the overflow pipe, which is located in the middle of the tank.
