Show Friday. January 22. 1999, THE DAILY HERALD. Home Magazine Screens lack security to keep from falling out windows The Orlando Sentinel are planning to install new windows in our home, but we are concerned Q. We about security. Our house is two stories high, and we have young children. I have heard stories about young children falling out of windows when they leaned against a screen that was not securely fastened. Is there anything that we can do to make these screens secure for our family? Also is there any screening available for French doors? A. Screens are intended to provide reasonable insect control and are not intended to provide security or to keep objects or people on the inside. Screens will not prevent a child from falling out of the window, and it is important that young children not be left unsupervised in a room where windows are open, particularly if the windows are any distance above ground level. If this is a concern for you and your family, you should make sure that you place stops on your windows to prevent a child from opening the window enough to get through-it- . Keep in mind that children can be curious and adept at figuring out how windows work, so a child-proo- f system is important. French door systems are becoming more popular, but one of the drawbacks has been the difficulty in putting screens on these doors, because they open in or out rather than sliding across, as with the patio door systems. In answer to this problem, a number of manufacturers have developed rolling screen systems which can be added to an existing French door system on either the inside or outside of the doors. If you have a door that opens in, the screen is installed on the outside of the doors. If the door opens out, you install the screen on the inside. When not in use, the screen simply rolls out of view. While the concept is good, the n screen engineering of a for such a large expanse is not particularly easy and requires quality manufacturing. If the screening is not finely engineered, you will have difficulty opening and closing the screen or may have problems keeping insects out. In one of the systems we have seen, there are two screens that roll out from either side and join in the center of the doors. With this type of system you need to ensure that the screens fasten securely where they meet, preferably using some form of weatherstripping to reduce insect entry. In another type of system, the screen rolls from one side across roll-dow- 11 the expanse of both doors and attaches on the other side. Problems can arise with this system even if the materials are sturdy, because the width of the screening causes the materials to flex too much, allowing the screening to slip out of the track. Another system has been developed where the screen rolls from the top down. The engineering in this system is better than most, but, as noted before, if the screen is too wide it will allow too much deflection and cause the screen to fall out of the track. We would recommend that you not use a screen that exceeds 5 feet in width. As with any product that you buy, you should check the manufacturer's warranty on these screens, because the quality of these products varies greatly. Some of these products are not suitable for coastal areas, and others do not fare well in extreme cold, so choose products that suit your climate. SHEINKOPF The Orlando Sentinel Energy fcst Q. A neighbor told me he recently had some loose-fi- ll insulation put into his attic, and his power bill went way down this month. What is this stuff? Because of inefficient win- dows, American homeown- ere may be paying as much. as $200 extra each year to heat and cool their homes. A. This is just the term for small particles of insulation shreds, granules and nodules that can be used in a home. When blown into building cavities, they conform to the spaces and become a good insulating material. They are especially liked by environmentally conscious people, because they are primarily made from recycled materials. Batts and blankets are commonly used during new construction, because they can be easily installed, but loose fill material offers benefits for use in existing homes. (Though they are also used in new construction as well.) There are three main types of materials used for this type of insulation. Cellulose is made from boxes and newsprint that is shredded and then pulverized into small particles. Chemicals added to the process provide resistance to fire and insects. Fiberglass is spun from molten glass into fibers. And rock wool insulation is spun from blast furnace slag and other rocklike materials. These loose-fil- l materials are d for use in areas that are irregularly shaped, have big obstructions or are other- - This question "was answered Robert B. They also are for use in existing homes, because they can be blown into place without disturbing existing finishes. Adding insulation to an attic or walls when needed will help reduce the utility bill, no matter what type of insulation material is used. If your home's insulation has settled or is not adequate for your climate, I urge you to have insulation put in. It will help save money all year long and keep the home more comfortable, too.
