Try wrapping things in tissue paper, but you're wasting your time. Your last day at work, make a list! Scurry to check off as much as you can. Beg and plead with your friends to take care of the things you just can't do or else you'll miss the plane and your spousechildrentravel partner will never forgive you. Newspapers A cynic's outlook on winter va- cations: Why bother? It takes days to get ready, and the "To Do" list is long: Cancel the newspapers. Hold the mail. Do next week's work. Find suckers to do what you can't be there to do. Water the plants. .Find a Gather guidebooks, maps, tips from friends on what not to miss. Plan what to wear. Wash it all. Oops! A stain. Find something else. Go buy it if you have to. , cat-sitte- r. last-minu- te . Next: Travel to destination, taking many deep breaths along the way. Ignore the aroma of the sweat stains you worked up preparing to go on vacation. Upon arrival, argue with the desk clerk for the room with the view you expected. Learn to accept the one you got. That first night, spread out in bed, think about the great week to come, and drift off to sleep. When you awaken in the middle of the d nightnight with a don't be mare, surprised. Because your work cannot be here with you, it will likely infect your dreams for several nights to come. Days Two and Three: Try to relax. Lie back in the sun. Empty your brain.
