Show Friday, February 12, 1993 THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Page D5 ollywood finds E'emakin o past mo vies tempting and risky tempt a remake. If Judy Garland became synonymous with one version of "A Star Is Born," why couldn't Barbra Streisand be indelibly linked with another? If RKO Radio made a "King Kong" suitable for the 1930s (and good for several reissues), couldn't Dino DeLaurentiis create a "King Kong" appropriate for the 1970s? In the above cases, the outcomes were mixed. But today's stars still turn to yesterday's films for suitable vehicles. Announcements (of varying degrees of certainty) have been made of: "Auntie Mame," with Goldie Hawn as the madcap previously associated with Rosalind Russell. "The Getaway," with Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger snarling their way through the roles once played by 1972's "hot couple" Steve McQueen and Ali By PHILIP WUNTCH core even if the trappings are different. The bittersweet " is an Americanization of the 1982 French hit, the more bleak "The Return of Martin Guerre." The new film benefits from the tender chemistry of Richard Gere, as a charming man with a secret, and Jodie Foster, as his wife. The wary, French film starred Nathalie Baye, who resembles Foster in the severity and fragility of her beauty, and Gerard Depardieu, whose robust charisma is of a different nature than Gere's gentler but more elusive charm. The setting has been transformed from the French provinces in "The Return of Martin Guerre," which was a land of primitive superstition and to the rural War South, presented in "Sommersby" as a country of deAnd "Love Affair," with feated gentility and Warren Beatty and Annette Bening prejudices. In fact, one of in the roles first played in 1939 by the weakest segments of "SomCharles Boyer and Irene Dunne mersby" deals with the hero's deand later by Cary Grant and Debofiance of the Ku Klux Klan. But the rah Kerr in the 1957 remake, "An film's basic relation Affair to Remember. ' ' The most successful remakes retain the original film's emotional Dallas Morning News The dearth of solid original material in Hollywood usually produces two trends sequels and remakes. If 1992 saw a surplus of sequels, then 1993 is developing into the year of the remake . Last week alone brought the openings of "Sommersby," "The Vanishing" and "Guncrazy," remakes all. "Scent of a Woman," released in late December and a strong Oscar contender, was "suggested" by a 1975 Italian film with Vittorio Gassman. And in the next few weeks, moviegoers will watch such recycled material as "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey," "Born "Body Yesterday," Snatchers" and "The Point of No Return" (featuring Bridget Fonda in an Americanized version of the French hit "La Femnie Nikita"). Remakes are as artistically risky as they are tempting. A successful movie represents a serendipitous combination of director, screenplay and actors, and it's rare that such good fortune can be repeated. Still, creative egos play an important part in the decision to at ship, and the moral consequences that follow, are as strong in the new film as in the original . Another successful remake was 1978's "Heaven Can Wait," an updating of the 1941 classic "Here Comes Mr. Jordan." The original film was one of several romantic comedies that dealt soothingly4w ith the afterlife, geared toward a public at the dawn of World War II. Robert Montd gomery played a boxer called to heaven before his time and forced to return to earth in another body. In the remake, Ward ren Beatty played a e in same the quarterback circumstances. By 1978, football had taken the place of boxing as one of America's favorite and the remake abounded with contemporary gags about health foods, corporate industrial waste and the pursuit of materialism. Yet a benign comedic spirit was evident in both films. Remakes generally fall into two categories: fresh versions of Old Hollywood classics and American "Som-mersby- hih-principl- 16th-centu- death-conscio- good-nature- good-nature- semi-divin- ry ed r of revisions le ft r?r EMILIO SAMUEL L. on-scre- x asT"'aii LiMy IT'S A CELEBRATION! Such 1930s weepies as "Magnificent Obsession" and "Imitation of Life" were with even more success for 1950s audiences. How-- . ever, remakes of "Madame X" and "Dark Victory" fared poorly. However, when Hollywood attempts to Hollywood, the situation gets dicier. Many early Hollywood successes not only reflected their distinct eras but were empowered by the kind of gossamer stars made possible by the old studio system. The star system still exists how else do you explain the success of "The but stars are on an Bodyguard"? earthier plateau. Comedies and tearjerkers are the most difficult to transfer to a new generation's tastes.
