High-Kahuk- Martina Utah Valley Community College Wolverines will be host of their eighth annual women's volleyball invitational Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Activity Center in Orem. UVCC, fresh off a championship in last week's Southern Idaho Tournament, is looking to win its own title for the first time in five years. The last (and only) time the Wolverines came out on top in this tournament was back in 1987. This week's tournament will be an eight-teaaffair, with teams from four states competing. Included in the field m are three teams UVCC beat last week: Southern Idaho, Dixie and Snow. Also included are Pima (Arizona), Colorado Northwestern, Eastern Utah, and defending . champion Ricks College. The tournament will open Thursday with UVCC taking on Colorado Northwestern in pool play at 3 p.m. WANTS TRADE: For two years, Andre Ware held his frustrations inside. Not any more. Ware, the Detroit Lions' first-roun- d pick in 1990, has asked to be traded, saying he has no chance to progress in Detroit. "There comes a time when you have to look out for your future," Ware said. "It just doesn't work having three young quarterbacks." Ware feels he's had no chance of moving past Rodney Peete and Erik Kramer during his time in Detroit. "There were plenty of times in my rookie year that I could have played, but I never did," Ware said. "Then last year, Rodney went down, and Erik didn't have great games against Chicago or Tampa Bay, but he was allowed to stay in and struggle, and bounce back from his mistakes. I don't see that I'm ever going to get that chance." General manager Chuck Schmidt said that while the Lions will not actively market Ware, they will listen to proposals from other teams. SUSPENDED: The payback for a $600 loan was steeper than Demetrius DuBose might have guessed. The NCAA has suspended the Notre Dame linebacker for two games for accepting the cash from two Irish boosters. Coach Lou Holtz accepted the penalty stoically, and ' said his top defensive player with-thcooperated fully investigation. "I think he was very honest and forthright. "We came that close to losing all three of them, and that would have been serious," Edwards said. "Instead, we came through prac- tice without serious injury and shouid have everyone available for Saturday. The attitude this year has been excellent." While the attitude is excellent, so is the team the Cougars will face, Edwards said. The Miners, who came within a blocked field goal of beating the Cougars in Provo last year, will be a tough opening game. Because the Cougars open with a conference game on the road, Edwards said the game was one of the most important of the year for his squad. "UTEP will be very tough," he said. "This is opening night and there is no way of knowing what will be coming out of the chute for them or for us. "They have a new defensive coordinator, so we have no idea what we will see (defensively). They also have some new people on defense. "If we can run the ball, use the clock some and not turn it over, we'll be in good shape." Newcomer Kalin Hall, along with last year's star Jamal Willis and redshirt Hema Heimuli, should help the Cougars be able to run the ball against the Miners, Edwards said. "Kalin has really picked up the offense quickly," he said. "He's kind of like a Casey Tiumalu with more speed and has played very well in scrimmages.
