(AP) -Glitzy Hollywood seems a universe away from the scratch-poo- r Mississippi Delta, but a sharecropper's son plans to put this town on iist. every movie buff s must-se- e Luster Bayless, who cleaned chicken coops and picked cotton as a boy, has been a costume designer for years. Two years ago, he bought a warehouse in his hometown and opened a museum. Assembled on three floors are 33 years of Bayless' work: suits, shirts, boots, gloves, dresses, belt buckles, suspenders. Bayless prefers to consider it a personal portrait of his long love affair with cinema, showing that in like in movies real life dreams can come true. "It's a talent I didn't know I had," Bayless said. "I always wanted to be In the film business. Luckily, I got a break." John Wayne's clothes, including the fatigues he wore in "Sands of Iwo Jma" and his "True Grit" black eyepatch, hold a place of honor in the rustic museum. Bayless, usually seen around town wearing one of Wayne's scarves, did 1 6 films with the Duke. The high walls are covered with cowboy hats, autographed photos, casting calls and other mementos. A volunteer committee meets at the warehouse every Tuesday to catalog, photograph and clean costumes still in boxes and on racks. One important job: matching each piece of clothing with the movie it was used in. For instance, there's a checkered, shirt worn by Richard Burton, and nobody has figured out when he ve long-slee- wore it. Bayless said ownership of the museum will be transferred to the city when he dies. Bayless, who spends more time in Los Angeles than Mississippi, believes in his Delta roots. Not far from where he grew up in poverty, star James Arness on the set of he bought a $110,000, five-bedroo- m house for himself and a Victorian mansion for his parents. He even purchased a genuine shotgun shack so he could show visitors the kind of house he was born in. Bayless developed a love of movies at an early age. After long hours in the cotton fields, he would sweep floors at the local movie theater so he could watch the shows for free. He left Ruleville and hitchhiked west in 1959 with $65 in his pocket. He got a stockkeeping job at a costume company across the street from Paramount Studios in Holly- wood. Soon, he began molding hats for the movies. "I begged the boss to give me anything," Bayless said. "Gary ALHAMBRA THEATER RADIO GRAND I FLYER (Short Subject) ROBSN 4 ..i STOOGE TO CONJA BOS HOSKINS .' ' ' Ruleville, 100 miles north of Jackson, is a plucky town that could use the publicity. The city of 3,245, revered by some for being the final resting place of civil rights leader Fannie Lou Hamer, is not exactly on the beaten path. "We've got problems, but we're doing as well as most other small towns," said Mayor Harvey Springer. "We're real excited about Luster's place.
