(AP) -An infertility doctor charged with fraud says he made mistakes but never schemed to trick w omen into believing they were pregnant when they were not. "I didn't perpetrate a scheme," Dr. Cecil Jacobson testified Tuesday in U.S. District Court. His goal, he said, was to "try to help women who were losing babies to maintain them." Jacobson, who now lives in Provo, Utah, faces 52 counts of fraud and perjury. He also is accused of fathering up to 75 children by his artificial insemination patients while claiming to use an anonymous donor bank. Jacobson was expected to continue on the stand today, and the case is likely to go to the jury Thursday. The doctor said he used injections of the hormone HCG to help women get pregnant and then to avoid miscarriage. Other doctors have testified that such injections would trigger a one sister, Mrs. Max (Ruth) Christensen, Palmdale, Calif. Shanley 3d BERNARDS VILLE, N.J. (AP) Bernard M. Shanley 3d, a former aide to President Eisenhower and elder statesman of New Jersey's Republican Party, died Tuesday at 88. A lawyer, Shanley served in the Eisenhower White House from 1953 to 1957 as deputy chief of staff, special counsel and appointments secretary. He ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 1958 and 1964. He was a member of the Republican National Committee, becoming Northeast regional chairman in 1972. He retired from the RNC earlier this month. - He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad as a conductor and also for Amtrak and Rio Grande. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, and boating. According to the police report, the Guest and Adams vehicles collided and the two girls were hit by Adams' car. Sarah died a few hours later and Laura was seriously injured.
