Show Weekend Weather Saturday, December 22, 1990 The Daily Herald, Provo, Utah Winter makes arctic entrance a The By The Associated Press .Winter made its entrance Friday on howling frigid winds generated by an Arctic cold front. On the first official day of winter the cold front ushered snow and bitter cold temperatures into the Mississippi Valley and the southern Plains. Temperatures plunged below zero from the northern Plateau and the Great Basin to the upper Mississippi Valley, turning gasoline to gel and stranding motorists by the hundreds. -- Accu-Weath- 10s -- 10s Os Os . The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials edged up 4.20 to bringing its gain for the week to 39.85 points. Advancing issues and declines ran about even in nationwide trading of New York Stock Exchange-liste- d stocks, with 774 up, 793 down and 481 unchanged. Volume on the floor of the Big NEW Board came to 233.40 million shares, up from 174.70 million in the previous session. Nationwide, consolidated volume in NYSE-liste- d issues, including trades in those stocks on regional exchanges and in the market, totaled 271.77 million shares. Trading was heavy both early in the morning and late in the session as professional investors engaged in maneuvers involving a group of expiring options and futures on stock indexes. Some of those contracts were settled on the basis of opening stock prices Friday, and others as of the close. The witching hour, which falls on the third Friday of March, June, September and December, was often a turbulent occasion for the market in years past. But recently it has been taking place in more orderly style. Beyond that specialized activity, analysts said it was an uneventful session, with many investors getting an early start on the Christmas holidays. The markets will be open Monday for an abbreviated Christmas eve session ending at 2 p.m. EST, instead of the usual 4 p.m. close.
