Iran's war veterans say Iraqi soldiers tough adversaries Iranian TEHRAN, Iran (AP) veterans of the 1980-3- 8 war with Iraq say the Americans and their allies cannot expect a short, quick war if they attack to liberate Kuwait. "The Iraqis can take a great number of casualties and continue to fight over the corpses of their deaii," said Col. Amir, an infantryman who fought in most of the major battles of the gulf war. Amir refused to be further identified. "If they want to fight the Iraqis, the '.Americans are going to have to stomach death," he said in an interview. "lost Iraqi soldiers have eight years of real war experience. The youhg Americans sent to fight have never seen a battle front, never killed or been near death," he said. Some U.S. soldiers in the gulf fought in Panama and Grenada, both quick campaigns. By conservative Western count, there were 1 million casualties on both sides during the Iran-Ira- q war. The war ended with a cease-fir- e in 1988. But peace talks dragged on until Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, apparently eager to pacify one front as multinational troops were deployed in response to his invasion of Kuwait, suddenly acceded to Iranian demands. Iran has condemned Iraq's Aug. 2 invasion of Kuwait, but it has been equally harsh in its criticism of the U.S.-le- d deployment of foreign soldiers to the gulf region. The Iranians, hard hit by an arms embargo throughout the gulf war, had to rely on massed infantry attacks with little armor and artillery and virtually no air cover. The Americans and their allies would wage a different kind of war, pitting their firepower and electronic expertise against Saddam's numerical strength. The United States plans to have 430,000 troops in the Gulf by January. A total of about 150,000 troops were sent by 27 other nations. Iraq has an estimated 220,000 troops in Kuwait and another 230,- - in southern Iraq near the Kuwait border. Saddam has said 250,-00-0 mors men will be sent to Kuwait, a deployment U.S. experts say could take a month. Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Mohammad Besharati said, "The Americans will lose on the ground because they dont have enough troops. I doubt they'll be able to push Iraq out of Kuwait" Besharati, chief of intelligence 000 for the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps during the war with Iraq, acknowledged that the Americans will control the skies. "But air power can be used only to support ground forces," he said. "It doesn't win wars on its own." r J Alireza, a wartime intelligence officer who refused to be identified further, said the Iraqis' chemical weapons were "their cutting edge." "They could wipe out large numbers of troops at a time," he said. "If the Americans think they can fight a short, quick war, they're wrong." 4 Saudis tighten security at holy shrines RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) -- For years, the Saudis have defended Mecca and Medina against posShiite sible attack by Moslem zealots. Now they fear that Islam's holiest shrines are threatened by Iraq. The Saudis are preparing to confront possible terrorism linked to pro-Irani- the stand-of- f with Saddam Hussein when this year's annual hajj, or pilgrimage, begins in June. "The Saudi leadership is prepared to repel evil and harm, and has taken precautionary measures to deal with anything that might undermine the security of pilgrims," Interior Minister Prince said recently. Nayef bin Abdel-Azi- z Turki, who heads the Islamic Department at the Saudi Embassy in Washington but is currently in Riyadh, said an Iraqi attack on the shrines would be a mistake. The Saudis are tight-lippe-d about security precautions in Mecca and are Medina, where banned. But travelers reported an increase in the number of security personnel and more intensive identity checks. Prince Mohammed bin Faisal bin "It would backfire on them," he said. "It's not the right place or the right time to try to stir things up." Thousands of soldiers from around the world were deployed to Saudi Arabia after Iraq invaded neighboring Kuwait on Aug. 2. jf ?.Miir".j!i AP LaserpljotQ.
