And it wasn't much different than last year. BYU, playing like players should have been wearing pajamas instead of pads, that late, couldn't handle the pumped up Island boys. DENVER (AP) A plane carrying the Washington Bullets to tonight's NBA game with the Utah Jazz made an emergency landing in Denver after temporarily losing power in one of its two engines. "We went through the whole tuck your emergency procedure head, grab your ankles. It was pretty frightening on the whole," Bullets Coach Wes Unseld said Sunday, after the plane was on the ground. "Some people were crying, that sort of thing." "We took all the instructions for a crash landing," said Charlie y Slowes, the Bullets' radio broadcaster. The plane, a United Airlines 737, left Baltimore-Washingto- n International Airport about 9 a.m. Sunday, made an intermediate stop in Denver and then was supposed to get into Salt Lake City about 2 p.m. Mountain Standard Time. One thing Reid must do before game time is figure out why Schreiner failed to score in the second half against Utah State. Schreiner had 15 points in the first half. Cougars couldn't execute, failed to pick up blitzes on offense; and faltered miserably at slowing Hawaii's modified run and shoot option attack. BYU's defensive effort looked like an exact rerun of the 4 Hawaii win in 1989. BYU couldn't pressure, couldn't tackle on the option and blew pass coverage all night. "This is a bitter pill to swallow," said BYU coach LaVell Edwards, whose team finished the regular season 10-- 2 heading into the Dec. 29 Holiday Bowl matchup with Texas 56-1- A&M. "It was a tough loss, but you have to credit UH, they did a good job. It would be interesting to see what would happen if they played that way all the time and not just when they play us," said BYU's coach. The Hawaii upset of BYU came on one of the most important days in school history. It was the day Detmer received ihe Heisman. It may have been the only time a player earned the honor, then had to play a football game. Did that affect BYU's perform Utah's men's basketball team, also on the flight, saw sparks coming out of the right engine. Unseld said the pilot came on the public address system and said an engine had blown out. Bullets veteran Bernard King said the people around him in first class heard a thump and then had about eight minutes to prepare for the emergency landing. Turbulence in the Denver area complicated matters as the plane undulated severely in strong winds. "Fire trucks lined the runway and they moved all the (air) traffic out of the area," said Unseld. Before the plane touched down, the pilots were able to restart the engine and navigated to a safe landing with no injuries. After the plane landed, passengers were told that the problem had been isolated and that they might take off again after a brief stop at the gate. It's been a long season for us. We've been at it for 16 or 17 weeks with those byes in between and the championship wrapped up." The fact Hawaii hammered BYU, and may have even rubbed it in a little by going for a touchdown on a fourth and one on the goal-lin- e in the waning minutes instead of kicking a field goal, bugged some of the Cougar contingent. It certainly wasn't wasted on Detmer, who had his poorest passing performance as a Cougar starter, completing just .489 percent of his passes, knocking his passing efficiency rating down four points. He threw four first half interceptions but still had 319 yards and three TDs. (See HAWAII, Page C-- 2) Bullets, Utes get rocky airplane ride '. Source! They got to their hotel about 7 p.m., 12 hours after starting the trip. Richard Boulware, an airport spokesman at Denver's Stapleton Airport, said the incident wasn't that unusual. "When you have 1,200 takeoffs and landings as we do here every day, shutting down one engine, voluntarily or involuntarily, is not a newsworthy event unless something happens," he said. Trail Blazers gallop to victory over Jazz By The Associated rress The Portland Trail Blazers, feeling right at home in the NBA early in the season, are ready to take their 14-- 1 record on the road. The Blazers, after beating Utah 7 Sunday night behind Buck 23 points and Williams' season-hig- h 11 rebounds, have compiled the NBA's best record by playing all but four games at home. They leave this week for four games on the road, but the first three stops are in Miami, Orlando and Indiana, where the teams have won less than 30 percent of their games. The fourth game will be at 101-9- Chicago. Elsewhere in the NBA on Sun- day, Indiana tripped Milwaukee 3 and the Los Angeles pers routed Minnesota 102-7107-10- Clip- 7. Portland snapped Utah's e winning streak with more e heroics by Terry Porter, five-gam- late-gam- who scored 10 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, including two in the final 5:06. On Saturday night, Porter's at the buzzer forced the second overtime in Seattle, and the Trail Blazers won in the three overtimes. Karl Malone, who led the Jazz with 36 points and 16 rebounds, said the team had reason for encouragement despite the loss. "Portland is a great team. A lot of people say they're the best team in the league," he said. "We've won five in a row and we had a heck of a chance to win tonight. You've got to be encouraged." Utah coach Jerry Sloan said his team is showing signs that its slow start is finally over. "When a team gets into a struggling situation, all the breaks seem to go the other way," he said. "I'm encouraged that the worst is behind us." The Jazz trailed most of the game, but never by more than 11 points. Malone scored six straight 3 to put Utah ahead with 5:56' to play, but Porter's from the top of the key with 5:06 remaining gave the Blazers the lead for good. His with 1:15 remaining put the Trail Blazers ahead Clyde Drexler, who scored a seaso9 points, sealed the outn-low come with a breakaway dunk with 52.7 seconds left.
