This beloved ballet in two acts is a romantic masterpiece that has endured for over 100 years. "Giselle" is a haunting story of love and passion. Ballerinas covet the role of Giselle because it not only challenges their technical expertise, but demands a wide range of emotional expression. When portraying Giselle, a dancer must transform from a young, innocent peasant girl, into a women consumed by passion and madness, and then finally into an ethereal spirit. Ballerinas agree on Giselle's fundamental qualities, but each dancer must develop her own interpretation. "Giselle" was first choreographed in 1841 by Jean Coralli and Julies Perrot for a rising young ballerina, Carlotta Grisi. The scenario of the ballet was created by the French poet Theo-phil- e Gautier, who was greatly attracted to Carlotta. Having been inspired by the legend of the Wilis from a book of the same name, Gautier felt that the story would be an ideal vehicle for the young ballerina. After a triumphant premiere in Paris, versions of "Gi- Photo courtsy of Ballet West quent stagings have stemmed from St. Petersburg versions through the Stepanov notations of the theatre's classical repertoire. Nikolai Sergeyev, the regisseur from 1904 to 1917, brought these notes with him to Europe when he fled Russia in 1918. It was from these notes that later "Giselle" works were mounted. "Giselle" was restaged for Ballet West in 1988 by the company's Artistic director, John Hart. Hart appeared as Albraecht opposite Margot Fonteyn's Giselle at the Royal Ballet in 1941. Later, as the ballet master of the same company he rehearsed "Giselle," and then in 1972 staged a production in San Diego for Deborah Hadley and An- - this St. Petersburg and staged two productions, one in 1848, and a second in 1850 with Marius Petipa as his assistant. Adam is reputed to have finished the entire "Giselle" score in one week, stating, "I enjoyed composing the music for "Giselle" as I was in a hurry and that always stimulates my imagination. Also, I was on good terms with Perrot and Carlotta (Grisi), and the work took shape, as it were, .in my own drawing room." Adam's original score has disappeared with only the piano score of 1841 'surviving. The music used' by Ballet West is based on later editions witn arrangements by Robert Irving, John Lanchbery and others. The sets for this romantic ballet were designed for Ballet West by Peter Cazalet. Cazalet is renowned for his period work. The costumes are by David Heuvel.
