GRID SERIES: San Diego State and the University of e Arizona will begin a football series in 1998, Aztecs athletic director Fred Miller announced. Arizona, which hasn't played the Aztecs since a 0 loss 11 years ago, will play in San Diego in 1999 and 2001. San Diego State, which has won six of 11 games against the Wildcats, will play at Tucson in 1998 and 2000, Miller said. Each team must guarantee the visitor $200,000 per game as part of their contract. four-gam- By DICK HARMON Herald Sports Editor Ty Detmer says he's shaken off a sore wrist and the elk hunt and is ready to go and claims the 14th ranked Cougars are over a week's rest, humilation at Oregon, and look forward to playing Colorado State Saturday in Cougar Stadium. Kickoff is noon Saturday. The game will be televised live by KSL-Tchannel five. (For additional pregame stories, see pages C3 and C4.) V, The Rams are 2 and 0 in the WAC. BYU is 1 and Detmer, who suffered a sore liga4-- 4-- 3-- 2-- ment bruise in his right wrist since the Washington State game, claims he is 100 percent. This past weekend he shot an elk on BYU's bye Saturday, a shot from 400 yards in the Manti LaSal mountains. "I've come back to normal," he said. "I feel good to be back out there. It's kind of hard to watch from the sidelines." The Cougar junior continues to be a frontrunner for the Heisman Trophy. A victory and good performance against the Rams is crucial for Detmer and teammates. "We're anxious to get playing again and get our pride back and show everybody we're a good team after that loss at Oregon," he said. LaVell Edwards says he expects the Rams to run the ball and try and control the clock. "There is little question that is what they want to do. They run the run-hap- ball extremely well. And we've pot to stop it. If we don't they'll" get n into passing, mixing it up and that will cause us trouble." USA OUT: The United States is out of the Dunhill Cup, a tournament it was expected to win for the second year in a row. Instead, the Americans failed to even reach the second round at St. Andrews, Scotland. Gone, too, is Australia, the second seed and a squad containing two of the game's best, Greg Norman and U.S. PGA champ Wayne Grady. The Aussies lost in the first round for the second straight year, this time to New Zealand. The American team of Mark Calcavecchia, Tom Kite and Curtis Strange fell in the first round Thursday to a trio of barely known Marc Farry, Jean Frenchman Van de Velde and Emmanuel 2on a chilled Old Dussart Course. O'MEARA LEADS: Mark O'Meara had nine birdies to give him the lead in the $1.3 million Las Vegas Invitational Thursday. O'Meara shot a 64 for a two-da- y total of 131, two strokes ahead of Tim Simpson, who had a 67 Thursday. The five-datournament concludes Sunday. le le y, NORM TO INDIANA: Paso assistant basketball Texas-E- l coach Norm Ellenberger said Thursday that he has accepted a job as an assistant to Bob Knight at Indiana. Ellenberger, who was forced out as New Mexico's basketball coach in the "Lobogate" transcript-fixin- g scandal in 1979, compiled a 134-6-2 mark at New Mexico. His reputation began to heal in 1986, when Don Haskins took Ellenberger on as a volunteer assistant at UTEP. In 1988, he became a paid, part-tim- e assistant, and last year coached the Miners late in the season when Haskins contracted severe laryngitis. "We've heard both sides of the story. Who knows what was said? We're behind Roger 100 percent in this," Harrington is quoted in today's Boston Globe as saying on the flight from Oakland to Boston after Wednesday's game. "His position is that he was not directing his anger toward the umpire, and we believe him and we're behind him." Richie Phillips, executive director of the Major League Umpires Association, on Thursday said Clemens threatened to get Cooney after being ejected. Clemens threatened Cooney "three times as they were taking him off the field. He said he would find out where Cooney lives and would get him," Phillips said from his home in Philadelphia. "The umpires in the crew told me. It's bizarre," Phillips said. "Clemens was arguing every call he didn't (agree with). He knew what he was saying was cause for ejection." The star pitcher was ejected from the fourth, and as it turned out, final game of the American League playoffs in Oakland for shouting obscenities at Cooney. At the time, the Red Sox were losing in the second inning. Oakland went on to win sweeping the series. Phillips said he planned to ask American League president Bobby Brown to look into the matter, and Harrington said he plans to talk to Brown about ejecting a player from such an important game. "It will not be in the form of a complaint, but I'm sure he's anxious to hear what we have to say," Harrington said of Brown. "Both sides have to be more tolerant of each other in these situations." Brown was at the game in Oakland and will review tapes and read Cooney's report of the incident before deciding whether Clemens should be fined or suspended. future Kearney said the earliest a potential new member could be added would be for the 1992-9- 3 year, with the 1993-9- 4 year more likely. '.'We 'were supposed to win, no matter what. When I hit the shot it was like . . . phew," he said, wiping his forehead. NBA clubs won the first six games in Milwaukee, Madrid and Rome by an average of 20 points. The Knicks, who play European champion POP 84 Split of Yugoslavia in Saturday's championship game, trailed by five points in the last two minutes of regulation time. You know Moore is getting more attention when both BYU and Virginia have byes this past week and ESPN's Beano Cook calls it dead even after saying Detmer had the edge the previous week. Other polls list Detmer as the Heisman leader. But wins and performances at this point count big. Voters must have their ballots in in about five weeks. In his opening remarks at the Education Summit, at the University of Virginia a year ago, Presi- This week Virginia's sports information office kicked its Heisman Trophy campaign for Moore in full gear. They started a conference call set up like BYU has invited the country to call in. "Imagine this you have the president, the governors and the cabinet all here and still the big man on campus is Shawn Moore." The President isn't the only one impressed. They have a good selling point. Virginia is ranked No. 2, its highest ranking in school history. Moore has been responsible for 17 touchdowns and has thrown just one interception. All Moore needs is for Detmer and the Cougars to stumble, trip or fall. One writer who is still impressed with Detmer, BYU, Provo and LaVell Edwards is Edwin Pope, columnist for the Miami Herald. Pope called Wednesday to ask for a clarification of something on the Wastach Front. It seems an article with his name on it has circulated in Provo since before the BYU-Miagame. The article, a taunting look at BYU and a prediction of a blowout, was not written by the veteran Miami writer, according to Pope. "I'd hope you can straighten it out. It's the most puzzling thing I've seen in 51 years of sportswrit-ing- . I didn't write it." Pope said he has nothing but the greatest respect for BYU. "My trip to Provo was by far the best experience I've had in some time, and we were treated better there than any place I've been." Pope said everybody always talks about Doug Flutie and Boston College's upset of Miami and Flu-tie- 's petformace. "But I tell you, Doug Flutie couldn't hold a candle to Ty Detmer. Not even close."
