INFANGER Herald Correspondent Falconry is the sport of taking game by means of a trained raptor. What a bland description of a sport that invokes images of knights in metal armor, helmet on their head and a gloved fist with a hawk sitting there waiting to be cast at some hapless rabbit. Falconry, as a sport, covers both the bland and exotic, but, in either case, it takes a lot of hard work. Falconers usually work with one of three different age groups of birds: Eyas, Haggard or Passage birds Eyas birds are nestling, birds. fledgling or These birds are the young, teachable starting point for the bird handler. Passage birds are young birds who can fly, but are less than one year old. Haggard birds are birds that are more than one vear old. Falconers have more than their share of regulations that they must meet. To have a raptor for hunting, the bird owner must have a valid falconry license and a federal falconry permit. A person must be at least to get a falconry license and for the first two years you are designated an apprentice and must have a general or master license holder as your sponsor. Apprentice falconers may only possess one morning. PINEVIEW Fair fishing for the perch down by the dam. Fish in 20- - to of water. Worms are the best. LAKE POWELL The upper end of the lake has been good for stripe bass fishing. Use anchovies on an eighth-ounc- e jighead. Watch for the boils or use electronics to locate the schools. LOGAN R1TER The river is low and clear but fishing has been good on the upper end with a Royal Wolf or a grasshopper pattern. Good fishing GREEN RTVER with a pheasant tail nymph bounced right along the bottom. A few fish are being taken along the top with a cricket pattern. RED FLEET Trout fishing has picked up. Use Velveeta on a sliding sinker rig. Perch fishing DEER CREEK has been excellent early in the morning. Use worms about one foot off the bottom. Many of the fish are small, but a few in the class are being taken. The lower PROVO RIVER end, below the Olmstead Diversion, has been fair with Velveeta. Use a size 16 hook and just enough weight for it to bounce along the bottom. SOUTH FORK OGDEN R1TER Fair fishing with a grasshopper pattern. The cooler weather may change this. GALLATPVJ RIVER, Montana -The upper end of the stream inside the park is beautiful. Cutthroats are being taken on large hopper patterns, rainbows with silver Panther Martin. MADISON RIVER, Montana -The browns are starting to move up out of Hebgen Lake and the fishing is starting to get good. Spinners are working the best. FLAMING GORGE Fishing is good for rainbows. Try baits and lures down to about 35 feet. Lake trout picking up remember the slot limit. Herald Correspondent Browning is one of the premier sporting goods suppliers in the United States. They have gained that reputation by being an innovative, progressive company. Every year Browning introduces new products. One of the many they have introduced this year is their folding tjame and camp saw. bird and it has to be an American d Kestrel or a hawk. . General falconry License holders must be at least and have 24 months of sponsor-verifie- d experience. General level licensees are allowed to have two raptors in their possession. A Master falconer must have at least five years experience in falconry at the general class level. Masters are allowed three birds. Red-taile- Equipment and facilities are carefully supervised and must meet essential minimum standards. The requirements must be met before a license is issued and a certification of compliance has to be written by a Division of Wildlife Resources Officer. Special facilities must be built or obtained for transporting the birds. Written permission must be obtained from the DWR to loan one's birds and they may only be loaned to a federal or state raptor project. Falconers come under both federal and state regulations and have more than their share of paper work. Every transfer must be do- cumented. Escapes and deaths must be reported within five days of the occurrence. Birds that are to be released to the wild must be released by DWR personnel. Annual reports must be submitted giving an inventory of birds owned, the birds' age, sex and how or from whom the bird was acquired. The Browning saw was designed as a lightweight carry-alon- g Bushnell 3x9x38" 25-fe-et saw. It is different from other saws in that it is designed to cut on pull stroke. Cutting on the pull stroke takes some getting used to. but is does allow you to put a lot of pressure on the blade without it binding up or bending which is the normal problem with lightweight saws. The saw is very sharp and cuts Walnut ' Discover is slow. through wood, bone or horn quite quickly.
