I just have to put it in perspective. You just have to go out and play.' . , ai was it on TV? TO I heard of (Jim) McMahon and everything but I really didn't focus on BYU. The first time I really remember seeing them play was against Air Force with Robbie Bosco in 1985. They were throwing the ball every down. I knew they won the national championship. It excited me to see a college team throwing the ball like that' I was used to Texas where they'd give it to Earl Campbell, then give it to Earl Campbell. Here was a team throwing it all the time. We did it in high school that year so it excited me to see a team out there doing it. Q Were there any other schools you even contemplated or was it BYU all the way? TO It's kind of scary, it was sort of BYU all the way. It's scary that it happened so quick and the way things turned out. Miami had three or four (quarterbacks) in the program; BYU had three but two were leaving within the next year. Q How many times did you throw the ball in high school each game? TD We threw about 30 times a game. Q Do you ever compare your skills to any of the others at BYU even if those guys were gone way before you were in high school? TO I don't compare. It's hard. Those guys played at a different time, with different people' and against different teams. It's hard. I just worry about what's going on with myself and not how they looked and how I'm looking. Q Do you look at old films of Steve Young, McMahon or Bosco? TD I did look at some films of Bosco, but that was before I was playing much. If I do, it is to look at defenses. The offense has changed a little and the defenses we play against have changed since then. Q There has been . one constant in BYU quarterback successes and that is the tight end. How important is it to have your star tight end Chris Smith back? TD It's going to be a factor. The tight end is such an important factor in our offense. Teams may try and take him away this year. If they do, we have good to spread it around. We're too good for a team to take away him and not enough people leave something else open. But as far as the tight end goes, he is the main receiver in our offense but we don't have to go to him. Q Now that Robbie Bosco has joined the staff,, what is his official title? TD I don't know for sure. I think he'll be quarterback coach or work with them. He'll probably have a say so in the offense now. Hell be a big help. , He'll give coach (Norm) Chow more opportunity to work with the receivers more closely and really tie down m U-.- I f W4 .' 9.052 .MO .500 .571 .579 9,536 4ic 7,733 3,400 14.SO '9.60 tJi iM 13.17 o.so I.S2 3.43 10,97915.030.33 7,037 7,505 14 .27 9.15 13.32 7.06 " de- pressuring us, we make big plays. We may .not have the great completion percentages because it is a door-di-e pass. Then sometimes well break a pass to a back coming across the middle on a dump pass. It's hard to do one or the other against us. Probably a zone is easier because you know exactly what they're doing. The fact he was there last year helped me a lot and I know it will this year. Q Who do you talk to during a game? TD- -I talk to Bosco, I talk to Chow because he is calling the plays. He is my coach. I talk to everybody. q it has to be a plus to have Bosco on the sidelines. TD It is. He's been there. He'll tell me to look at a certain place and if it isn't there where to go next and how to come hack and look a safety off . m. Q-B- Coi. M.WttaOft, BYU a remarkable year behind you, can you top it, is there a better year in you? TO That is my goal, to get better. I want to be more effiQ With cient, to have fewer interceptions, fewer forced balls. It's hard to improve on the yardage because you can't dictate the yardage you are going to have. You just have to try and be more efficient I don't know all the factors which go. into figuring passing efficiency, although I know yardages, touchdowns, attempts and interceptions are figured into it I don't go out and try and make all those factors work for efficiency. UllVO uiuia ;uu JIU UJ W auiv cuiu wiiijicbc paaocn aiiu score touchdowns. That is efficient football and what we want out of our offense. YU has run the football more and more recently. Could you comment on the running game this year. TO It's hard to say how it will be. We have big offensive linemen coming back. We have some hard runners like Peter Tuipulotu and Matt Bellini back. Scott Charlton and Stacey Corley are great runners and Eric Mortensen is back. They are some great runners. We might not even throw the ball. It's hard to say what we're going to do. It depends on what the defense allows us to do. If they " allow us to run, we may not pass I IS a times but game. hope they take away the run so we can throw 50 times.
