Show Page B2 THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Sunday, Aug. 19, 1990 Travel by bike not limited to short trips By The Associated Press From the time of its invention more than 150 years ago, the bicycle has conformed to the needs of its ridership, and that is more true than ever with today's In Amsterdam, according to an article in the current issue of Town Si Country, commuter bikes are the most common means of inner city travel. In Asian cities, the bike is a workhorse. American have only recently learned to appreciate the benefits of cycling, as Europeans have for years. Riding clubs and bike expedition companies are flourishing and it is easy to find package bike tours destined for the Vermont woods, the Loire Valley or even the Everest base camp in Nepal. The most popular bike in thw United States today is the mountain bike, which has grown from a tiny market share in 1985 to an estimated 60 percent of the 10 million cycles sold in the United States annually. Mountain bikes are an American concept, born of attempts in the early 1980s to adapt the standard newsboy's bike to the dirt fire roads and trails of Marin County, Calif. Tinkerers added gears, rede- signed the frames and improved brakes. Eventually the bikes evolved into today's reliable and rugged machines that are popular for the comfortable upright riding position, fat tires that smooth the ride over logs and stones and wide-rang- e, gearing. bikes are the trend to hit Europe and sales have been brisk. If you don't intend to cycle on rough terrain and are looking for a versatile variety that rolls more easily on the road, a hybrid or fitness bike may be right for you. Hybrids can do everything a mountain bike can, except handle the muddiest, most demanding conditions. Most have the upright handlebars and comfortable riding position of a mountain bike yet are a little lighter with quicker handling. Hybrids are fine for light g trails and Road bicycles, the modern equivare marvels alent of the of efficiency. Daring cyclists can push these bikes to speeds of more than 60 miles an hour on long mountain e Fat-tir- latest American-bre- d off-ro- ad road-ridin- curb-hoppin- g. d, descents. (AP) old Jimmy Highbaugh took a run-- ; ning jump into the swimming pool at Indian Summer camp. "I like the swimming and food here," he said. Then he blurted out, with a wide smile: "I'm over my cancer. It came back two times but I'm over it now." Jimmy, who had Hodgkin's disease, was among 59 cancer-stricke- n boys and girls attending Indian Summer for a week this summer. Some had shaved heads and others had lost limbs. But mostly it was like any camp ;. where kids swim, fish, hike rnd act ; like kids. "It's a chance for them to be , I- pretty normal for a week," said ,Jack Geil, a diatric oncologist at . ;the University of Kentucky Medical t Center. c ?'Most of the kids they see have t the same cancers, like they have," he said. "They can relate to that. I They're doing pretty much normal things. The ones on therapy see . others coming off therapy." ' During meals, Geil helped give chemotherapy treatments. The camp was one of four of its " kind in the nation when it was ; started in 1982 by the Lake Cum-- ; berland District Cancer Council, an . advisory group of the McDowell , Cancer Network. There are more ; . than 100 camps now. ; Campers are charged a $5 regis-- ; tration fee to attend. The $300 it costs to send a child to the camp is raised through donations and spe- cial projects, according to camp director Gloria Sams. Besides fun and games, campers ; are taught to live with others, to and earn . gain some a degree of independence. ' "It's hard to make excuses when ; the person sleeping next to you has gone through the same thing," said ! Sams. The campers didn't complain. "I enjoy being around the counse- lors," said Lonnie Johnson, 12, of Lexington. "They're fun. You're al-- ; ways doing something. You're nev- ec sitting around. It's a lot of fun."
