"He's always been enthused about the city of Orem, about Orem High, would always put himself out to be fair for us,"said Jarman. When Jarman needed a partner in organizing a campaign for lights on the Tiger football field, he went directly to Park. They helped garner more than $60,000. "Russ helped contact people and ask for donations. He organized a .breakfast and was a big force in helping." . Bill Delaney, now principal at Pleasant Grove, agrees. "Russ Park will always be known for his enthusiasm. When he gets involved in things, he puts all his heart and .soul into it." " . Russell W. Park was born Jan. 17, 1922 at his parent's home, the second child of Dean E. and Bertha . Park. ' He graduated from Lincoln High in 1940. He was captain of the football and basketball teams. He got hooked on athletics and fol- lowed it the rest of his life. - "Russ Park was the third best center in the history of Lincoln High," claims Edwards, the Cougar coach. "The best was my brother Don, I was second and Russ was third." , 1 Park attended BYU for one quarter before deciding to go to work. He married Jerry Memmot Nov. 29, 1941. Whn World War II started, Park enlisted in the U.S. Navy's Seabees In 1943. He served on active duty in the Aleutian Theater. After Park returned home, his mother and father closed down Park's Cafe, which was near 800 North in Orem. His father, who had made money during the war selling produce across the country, decided retire. Park remembers coming home and seeing his father's money to stashed in coffee cans in the nace room of his store. "He didn't believe in banks because he'd lost money when some of them closed." Russ Park reopened the cafe a year after he returned from the service. He operated it until September of 1949. fur- 56 .461 12 61 .450 1$Vs hi L SmFrmcnco By DICK HARMON 12 During that time he actively followed Lincoln High athletics, shooting photographs and movies of football and basketball games. He joined other boosters in building a press tower for football games. In 1947 the Parks started the Dean E. Park and Sons Outstanding Player Award, which has continued until this day. It is still presented to the best athletes in more than 20 sports and many of the area high schools. Leo Ferguson won the first outstanding football player award in 1947 and LaVell Edwards won the first outstanding basketball player award that same year. Since 1954 it has been known as the Park's Sportsman Award. Park was one of the first members of the Orem Jaycees and was one of the original members of the Orem Volunteer Fire Department. In 1949 his mother and father decided to end retirement and come back to the cafe. By 1952 our business had grown to the point we had to move." Russ Park then bought 15 acres in the store's present location and stocked it with just $7,000 worth of sporting goods. It also included a snack bar, billiards and a barber shop. From the beginning Park included his entire family in the business. His wife Jerry did ,the bookkeeping. Judy and Nan have both worked at the store. Nan is still in charge of accounts receivable. Randy is the acting manager and was recently named the member of the year by the National Buying Syndicate of Sporting Goods. "Nan always maintains if she were a boy, Randy wouldn't have stood a chance," said Russ. But Park's has thrived. Browning named Park's Sportsman the national retailer of the year one year. "We built it from scratch. It gives me a thrill to sit down with Randy. We both have the same philosophy and ideas about what it takes to be successful. We don't take a lot of money out for in salary, but we put it back into the store." Park's Sportsman has been remodeled eight times since 1954. the building now contains 26,000 square feet. Russ Park isn't actively involved in the store's decision-makin- g policies; his son Randy is. But that doesn't stop him from spending time there greeting customers and going to his office. He loves to play golf. He carries a 20 handicap and his graphite Cobras. "I'm a 20, but I can shoot an 88." Players have nicknamed him "Jungle Jimmy" because of the ankle-hig- h rough. Defending champion Payne Stewart complained that in some of the rough all you can do is "chop it out to the fairway." Herald Sports Editor When you walk into the store, there he is with that smile, jewelry draped over his wrist and rings on his fingers, trying to his eyes. Meet Russ Park. Though retired, he's the fixture at Park's Sportsman, Utah's largest privately-owne- d sporting goods store. It is celebrating Founder's Day this weekend. Russ Park retired from an active role in managing the store eight years ago, turning the helm over to his son Randy. But on any given day, if you go into Park's, there is Russ. His smile is right there by the skis, the golf clubs or the shoe rack. When he isn't smiling on the show floor, he is in his personal enclave, an office he shares with his partner and wife of 41 years, Jerry, his high school sweetheart. "He's like a bulldog when he gets involved in something," said BYU coach LaVell Edwards. "He is as hard a worker as you'll find in the retail business." "I've always appreciated his support as a booster and his enthusiasm," said Berdean Jarman, former principal at Orem High School. Jarman has been working with Park since the store had a cafe in it and he'd go there for lunch with his friends.
