Direct questions to Mitch Wilkinson, AIDS funding want tio with many of the visiting scientists expressing optimism over trends, drugs and vaccines evolving in connection with the epidemic. But instead of ending on a positive note, the final session of the week-lon- g meeting was disrupted by a shouting, g demonstration Chanting, that prevented the final speaker, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Louis W. Sullivan, from being heard. The fact that he was urging cooperation, tolerance, understanding and caring by scientists and AIDS activists made the demonstration ludicrously ironic and misplaced. Activists who demonstrated throughout the conference charged the federal government with slowness in finding new treatments and making them available to people infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Anyone can understand the frustration of a person facing the development of a disease that is inevitably fatal. But it is totally wrong to condemn the government for supposedly failing to marshal adequate resources against AIDS. For instance, where Congress ordinarily appropriates funds to fight all diseases, the Senate has voted $2.9 billion and the House another $4 billion over five years in the campaign to control whistle-blowin- AIDS alone. Currently, AIDS gets more government research money more than $1.2 Letters TEiey F0S Herald comment Interesting data Editor: Mandela: Villain or hero? Gaylene Hahn stated the former. Jil Huntington stated that she "has done research concerning Nelson md Winnie Mandela." She had no doubt that tb'j Mandelas were heroes.' I, too, have done considerable research in the matter. Perhaps we can get closer to the truth by examining the facts available from many public sources. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born into a royal Xhosa tribe family on July 18, 1918. ; His father died when he was ten and he was raised thereafter by his uncle, the tribal chieftain. He was enrolled at Fort Hare ; college in 1938 where he met future African National Congress (ANC) President Oliver Tambo. Mandela completed his degree by corre-- ; spondpnee through the Univ. of S. Africa, and went on to receive a law degree from the Univ. of Witwatersrand. He set up a law practice in Johannesburg with Oliver Tambo. He was led into the African National Congress by Walter Sisulu. Mandela, Tambo, and Sisulu organized the ANC Youth League in 1948. Through the ANCYL they were able to control the ANC. After serving a brief stint in prison in 1952 for violating the Suppression of Communism Act, Mandela was made president, Transvaal Region of the ANC; and Deputy President of the ANC nationally by the end of the year. (Various sources including Newsweek, Feb. 19, 1990 and the People's Daily World, Feb. 15, 1990) The ANC was banned by the government in 1960 for being a vehicle of the Communist Party in South Africa. Mandela and his comrades began to underground. By 1961, the Central Committee of the South African Communisty Party and the leadership of the ANC decided jointly to form a "military" arm, "Umkhonto We Sizwe" ('Spear Of The Nation' in English.) Mandela was its first Commander in Chief. (Hearings. U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Security and Terrorism, Mar. 25, 1982, p. 539) An arrest warrant was issued for Mandela in 1961 when the Umkhonto We Sizwe sabotage campaign began. His communist allies provided for his travel out of the country. He went to Ethiopia and Algeria to receive guerilla training and to obtain funds and weapons. He returned to South Africa by July, 1962, was arrested, tried, and sentenced to five years in prison. (A History of Communism in South Africa, by Henry R. Pike, Christian Mission International of South Africa, 1985, p. 348) On July 11, 1963, the South African Police raided the Communist Party headquarters in Rivonia, a suburb of Johannesburg. The police confiscated more than 200 documents indicating a conspiracy to overthrow the government of South Africa. The government arrested 13 individuals, including Mandela who was brought from prison to stand trial again. Among the documents presented at the trial many contained specific language: "... the committee should bear in mind the following main targets: 1. Strategic road, railway and other communicatioi.s: 2. Power stations; 3. Police Stations, camps and military forces; 4. Major industrial installa'. te pro-Sovi- Irredeemable government stooges." (Rivonia: Operation Mayibuye, by H.H.W. DeVilliers; Afrikaanse 1965, p. 69) The evidence against Die accused was so overwhelming that the defense did not challenge any of it. Mandela pleaded guilty to three of the four counts he was charged with, including one of the counts of sabotage. Because of his open admission of sabotage and advocating violence, even Amnesty International did not list Mandela as a prisoner of conscience.' The above information is a sampling of the mass of information readily available to anyone who is genuinely interested in doing research into the Mandelas' past and f02 FOB A CUM... THE MECKEL ttf than any other disease in America except for cancer. While heart disease receives about half as much, it kills as many Americans in six weeks as AIDS has killed in nine 83,000 years. billion Further, as Charles Krauthammer pointed out in a Time magazine column, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, under pressure of AIDS activists, has drastically altered its regulations for testing new drugs in an exception for AIDS sufferers only. Certain drugs are being made available to AIDS victims before the customary testing process is complete. Krauthammer also pints out that, unlike many other diseases such as brain cancer, AIDS is not an "act of God" as many activists contend. Nine out of 10 victims contract the disease through homosexual sex andor intravenous drug use "voluntary behaviors well known to be highly dangerous." The San Francisco demonstrators' actions could be dangerously counterproductive. As Dr. James Curran, head of the AIDS program at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, said, "It's sad. It's an example of the fragmentation of the efforts that I most fear in the 1990s, sick vs. well, gay vs. straight." present activities and beliefs. In future letters I shall be happy to present more of the damning data on the Mandelas and the leadership in Washington who are intent on of U.S. taxpayers' spending dollars in backing the Communist lead ANC. Albert Buns Spanish Fork multi-millio- 5. A, be the first The Sixth International Conference on AIDS has concluded in San Francisco tions, and; Wednesday I July 4, 1990 Cost of living cuts Editor: I am against the proposed bill pertaining to the cuts from the cost of living adjustments by eliminating this year's COLA which would cost the Social Security recipients $3,200 per couple over five years in order for Congress to balance the budget. I am outraged that such a bill has even been introduced or presented. Only a few e individuals are able to work with top pay until the retirement age of 65, in which time the only Social Security benefits which they are entitled to is $975 per month. However, on the average, unemployed individuals such as the elderly, handicapped and children of divorced parents, only receive approximately $400 per month for Social Security benefits. Out of that they pay $28 for Medicare or Medicaid insurance, which leaves $372 for their necessities. To deduct another $50 a month per couple from Social Security benefits is really putting a hardship on the American people by demanding so much. Although President Bush promised a kinder, gentler nation, he has apparently forgotten about the American people. Congress has been so concerned about balancing the budget that they have overlooked their recent 30 percent raise, plus living adjustments and free hospitalization coverage as long as they are in office. Why can't they deduct part of their benefits to help balance the budget, as they have arranged for the rest of the American people? Balancing the budget is another way of raising taxes, but we cannot read the lips when President Bush says those words. Louise Fucile Orem full-tim- The least of these...' We should immediately place him on trial with a jury of his "peers," trump up any charges needed to have him incarcerated, and if that wont work, bum him out of his home in the middle of the night, or tar and feather him and those that support him, and confiscate all his assets. Do not allow him to travel on our city street or highways without being harrassed by our state and local law enforcement agencies. Finally, once he is incarcerated, storm the jail as an angry mob shooting both Bernt and those that are with him at the time thus putting to an end the life of a man whom God saw fit to place on this earth! If elected, I will appoint something called a drug czar. My media advisers say it sounds impressive and looks good in headlines. Fact is, he wont be able to do much. If you elect me as your president, I promise that four years from this date, there will be as many murders and robberies as there are today. The fact is, when you have large numbers of people who are poorly educated, badly housed, and jobless, they have the highest crime rate. "So what do you expect me to do about crime? Sure, yell at me to build more prisons, hire more cops and judges and guards. Fine. Then I'll raise your taxes to pay for it. And wont that make you love me? Sure. "And speaking of education, I intend to be your Education President. My media people think it has a nice ring to it. But I dont know what that means. The fact is, we already spend an enormous amount on education. Yet, the surveys show that our young have a brilliant knowledge of rock, dope and sports, but they cant find China on a map. So who's fault is that? Show me a kid who is a bozo and I'll show you parents who are palookas. Do you ever turn off the tube and read a book, so your kid will think that's normal behavior? Of course you dont, you tube-glue- d klutz, so dont expect me to do it for you. "In conclusion, if you elect me president, dont expect any miracles. Despite what my image-makesay, I'm just a guy. I put on my pants one leg at a time, and I go to the potty. "So I'll try to keep us out of a big war, while still propping up the industry.
