Show Business Friday, June 15, 1990 The Daily Herald, Provo, Utah NYSE unveils plan for - NEW YORK (AP) After 198 years of trading siocks only during the daytime, the New York Stock Exchange plans to phase in a market by the end of the decade to meet increasing competition from overseas. Big Board Chairman John J. Phe-la-n Jr. on Thursday unveiled a five-ste- p plan expected to begin later this year that would allow access to the nation's largest exchange after the current 4 p.m. Eastern closing time. "There is some volume going overseas, and we'd like to capture some of that volume back," Phelan said in Nashville, Tenn., where he was meeting with officials from a regional brokerage. k trading is already a reality in the foreign currency and U.S. Treasury bond mar- ur Round-the-cloc- dealers where ket, conduct transactions via telephone and computer links. But the concept has stirred controversy at the stock exchange because it could lead to replacing the powerful "specialists," who today regulate the flow of trading, with computers. "It's an incredible surprise," one veteran specialist who asked not to be named said. "The incredible thing is that the floor hasn't lynched anyone yet." Nevertheless, the exchange has been pressured by new technology and competing markets that allow traders to buy and sell Big Board-liste- d stocks domestically and abroad when the NYSE is closed. The London exchange, which eliminated its specialists and trading floor when it went electronic four years ago, and the Tokyo market have siphoned the most business. The steps outlined by Phelan would begin with two brief sessions after the market's normal close. Subsequent phases would involve stock auctions held several times a night, some form of conventional trading overnight and finally dealing. Market experts said that by phasing in the plan, the NYSE could stimulate after-houintprest. The ur rs Quotes SHEARSON GROUP Bid Ask j ? i f !
