Show ArtsEntertainment Tuesday, May 8, 1990 The Daily Herald, Provo, Utah Actress works with kids through grant to school weoney'' delivers fihrilDs, comedy By JEAN MARSHALL Herald Staff Writer Well worth seeing, Opera West's production of "Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," plays through Saturday in the de ' Jong Concert Hall at Brigham Young University. Stephen Sondheim's musical is more than a thriller. It portrays the very dark Dickensian world of the exploited lower classes of 19th century England. The tale tells of the young barber who is kidnapped and deported to the prison colony at Botany Bay in Australia upon orders of an unscru- Eulous judge who has designs on young wife. The young women poisons herself rather than remain in his clutches and he then adopts her pretty little daughter. After 15 years, Benjamin Barker Musical Review who has changed his name to Swee- ney Todd, manages to escape and return to London to exact his revenge on Judge Turpin and his accomplice Beadle Bamford. He sets up a barber shop in his old quarters above Mrs. Lovett's meat pie shop. Mrs. Lovett encourages his plan and laments the waste when he silences a local competitor who has recognized him. With a new source of meat, Mrs. Lovett's pies soon become the best in London until the neighbors complain about the acrid smoke from her oven chimney. Coincidentally a young sailor who Performance marks 50th anniversary for dance teacher "Famous Feet," a variety show in song and dance will be presented Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. The Thursday and Friday performances are scheduled for Promised Valley Playhouse in Salt Lake City. Saturday the perormance will be at Timpview High School in Provo. Performing arts summer school set for local youth High school students, can attend summer school and love every min- ute of it. The Utah Arts Media Center offers "Summer Fame," a program with the atmosphere of a performing arts high school. Six weeks packed with classes in acting, voice, ballet, tap and jazz. Students will learn from Utah's performing arts professionals including directors, film makers and actoars. A major musical production will be presented by the students at the end of the course. A special technical theatre section will also be offered for those wan-tig- n to write, produce and film their own movie. The school is under the direciton of Pam Lockwood, former director of the South Bay Center of Arts, in Los Angeles. She ; Per-fprmi- has taught voice and acting for the past 15 years and directed many plays in California, Nebraska and Utah. Lockwood is the writerdirector of "Light Express," a musical flow playing in Provo. Classes begin June 18, six hours daily, five days a week, until July 27. Registration is $300 or $250 if paid before June 1. Registraiton for the Technical Theatre classes is $500 or $425 before June 1. All classes will be held at the Utah Arts Media Center, 250 W. Center, Provo (Continental Plaza 2nd floor), and are open to high school-ag- e students daily.
