And what better way to celebrate America's favorite sport than by taking home a few videos. Hollywood once considered baseball movies poison because movie moguls thought women, who constitute a large part of wouldn't want to see them and foreign audiences simply didnl understand the mechanics. Before the late 1980s, studio heads may have had a point. Some e baseball classics, of the though warmly embraced by fans, did lousy boi office. Such movies as lM2's "The Pride of the Yankees," starring Gary Cooper as Lou Gehrig were big disappointments. However, "The Natural," Robert Bedford's allegorical movie in 1984 about a gifted player, and "Bull Durham" (19881, an amusing and lusty tale of the minor leagues starring Kevin Costner and Susan box-offi- film-goer- s, all-tim- helped turn Sarandon, around. things biggest grossing baseball The movie of all time is last year's ' Field of Dreams," which had taken in $53.3 million by August. Bull Durham" was second with J50.3 million. And the comedy smash, "Major League" 1989, ran third with $48.5 million. Ail three are on video. There are other baseball movies hard-cor- e fans might want to watch that will even be enjoyed by those who've never downed a hot dog at the park.
