In a survey in Thuuday's New England Journal of Medicine, one in three men and one in 10 women admitted telling lies when it suited their bedroom tactics. Although this may be no great surprise to some, the researchers said people's lying ways should be kept in mind when trying to determine whether potential partners are at risk of AIDS. "The implications of our findings are clear," they wrote. "Patients should be cautioned that safe-se- x strategies are always advisable, despite arguments to the contrary from partners." In the survey, 34 percent of male respondents and 10 percent of women admitted they had "told a lie in order to have sex." Even more said they would lie if a situation arose where it would be to their advantage. The researchers noted that young people are advised to choose sexual partners who are at low risk of infection with the AIDS virus. One way to do this: question partners about their sexual pasts. It was conducted by Drs. Susan D. Cochran of California State University in Northridge and Vickie M. Mays of the University of California, Los Angeles. They published their results in a letter to the journal. In the survey, 47 percent of the men and 60 percent of the women believed they had been lied to for purposes of sex. Asked about hypothetical situations, 20 percent of the men and 4 percent of the women said they would lie about having negative AIDS tests. (AP) -Some students and others in this mostly rural section of Vermont want condom vending machines installed in high school restrooms to combat rising teen-ag- e pregnancy and the spread of AIDS. But opponents say they have a better answer to safe sex for teenagers: abstinence. "Condoms are not the answer," Brattleboro Union High School sophomore Wendy Veenema told a public hearing Tuesday before a school advisory board attended by about 70 people. The advisory board agreed, votn dising 2 to urge the trict's school board to kill the proposal. If the school board rejects the five-tow- avisory panel's recommendation and approves condom vending machines, Brattleboro Union would the first high school in Vermont to adopt such a policy, officials said. A final decision is expected before the school year ends in June. Opponents, most of them adults, said Tuesday that the school should stress abstinence among students. But those on the other side of the issue said installing the machines would be an acknowledgement of reality.
