Show Fnday, Morcb Utah's snowy backcountry an adventure waiting to happen By JOHN EEST Herald GHTe&pubdrn! Outdoor news Uintas and the Wasatch Mountains. There are four trail heads that Mirror leave from the Lake Highway. In Central Utah groomed trails are located at Scofield, Ephraun Canyon, Manti Canyon, and a 40 mile loop trail east of Mt. Pleasant. According to the State Parks Department the Manti mountain range is the "backbone of central Utah." It extends from Nephi south for more than 150 miles. The Skyline Drive, which stretches along the summit line of the Manti range, provides excellent snowmolilmg from November to April. Southern Utah has its own unique pocket of trails in the scenic Cedar Breaks National Monument area. The Cedar Mountain Complex provides snowmobilers with extensive trails in southern Utah's famous color country. According to the Parks Department's Trail Guide this area with ample snow on high mountain trails, and winter access to some of western America's most unique scenery, and access to overnight accommodations makes it one of Utah's most appealing snowmobil-in- g areas. Trail guides offering information on all the trail systems and route maps are available at regional State Park offices or from the state's main office at 1636 West North Temple No. 116 Salt Lake - 1M THE FXKALD, Prove. Uuih. Big Game iP 3 - City. Hundreds of miles of scenic trails winding through mountains, forests, and open meadows make Utah a sjwwmobiling wonderland. The Division of Parks and Recreation in Utah is stnvmg to meet the needs of the thousands of winter enthusiasts searching for adequate trails for scenic touring and recreational riding. Currently the Parks department grooms hundreds of miles of trails in four specific areas of the state. Most residents of the state can reach one or two of these areas within an hour's drive. Weekly grooming and care of the trail system shows a commitment to the needs of winter recreational riders. In northern Utah trails are maintained in Logan Canyon, Monte Cristo and Hardware Ranch. Hardware Ranch, managed and operated by the Division of Wildlife Resources, provides snowmobilers with a warm visitors center, heated rest rooms, and information about the wintering elk herd. In the northern Utah complex there are 150 miles of groomed trails that pass through the Wasatch-Cache National Forest in Weber, Cache, and Rich counties. Several side and interconnecting trails join the groomed trail complex. Side trails can be rough and snow conditions are often unpredictable. An extensive trail system is maintained around Wasatch Mountain State Park and in the Uinta Mountain area. This system contains more than 150 miles of groomed trails traversing the High 2, la addition to state groomed trails stjowiootulers may be operated on public roads, trails, or land that are signed or designated as open to snowmobile use. A new trail sponsored by the Utah Snowmobile Association is being developed this season. The trail will connect the Strawberry valley to Soldier Summit in Spanish Fork Canyon. Next year this trail will be groomed by the State Parks Department. The Utah Snowmobile Association is a strong force in Ulah's winter recreation program. Craig Cazier, president of the Utah Snowmobile Association says it was the lobbying of this group that provided funds for trail grooming equipment purchased by the Parks department. "This group is currently working on a State snowmobile brochure and video in conjunction with trie Utah Travel Council," says Cazier. The Parks department recommends snowmobilers be aware of several important laws. All snowmobiles used on public lands must display a current OHV registration sticker. may operate snowmobiles in Utah for 14 days without Utah registration. Any rider under 18 must wear a helmet. No one under eight years of age may operate a snowmobile on public lands. Operators 8 to 15 y ears of age must possess an OHV education certificate. Other tips recommended by the nark? danartmenf include not riding alone, and letting someone know where you're going and when you'll be back. & IK SOP in late March - SALT LAKE CITY In late March, the Utah Lvuid of Big Game Control will travel around the state to hear public comments hunting oppr-tumtie- s concerning big and regulations. A March 30 Capitol Building Union membership may have cost Law his major league job By DOROTHY KNOELL Herald Sports Writer According to the Toronto Globe & Mail, there was more to Vance Law's switch to playing baseball in Japan than meets the eye. Law, who contributed to the Chicago Cubs' National League West drive last year, was not by the Cubs and eventually signed a contract with the Chunichi Draged ons in Japan. His agent, Steve Freyer, said the current nego- player-manageme- nt tiations are at the heart of other teams' lack of interest in Law after the Cubs released him. "The fact that Vance held the position of National League player representative undoubtedly damaged him," said Freyer in a Globe & Mail storv of Jan. 25 by Marty York. York said Law, a former Provo High and BYU star, was "considered by insiders to be one of the more hard-nose- d players at the bargaining table" and was there-fore- d deemed "undesireable" by the Cubs, even though they had not signed a new third baseman. Since he is no longer playing in the major leagues, Law was not eligible to participate in the players' negotiations with the owners. His place was taken by Tom Herr, considered to be less hard-lin"It's crazy, because (Vance) is one of the greatest guys on the planet," Freyer said in the article. "And he was a valuable player. He can play anywhere in the infield. He's only 32. He didn't have a great year last year (he averaged .235 with seven home runs and 42 RBI) but, at the very leat, he's a very good utility man. "It is simply impossible to believe he has no value to the Cubs or to any other club in the major leagues." York said the lack of interest in Law by the Cubs "becomes even more suspicious when one considers that the Cubs' only candidates for the third-bas- e position are a pair of antiquated journeymen, Domingo Ramos and Luis Salazar." The story also quotes Freyer as saying, "Vance has a good deal with the Japanese club, but he's still very uncomfortable right now. He has trouble understanding why his union role should affect his status as a player. "As far as I'm concerned," Freyer continued, "it's further evidence that the baseball establishment operates in Machiavellian fashion." Elsewhere in pro sports: The last NBA player who finished a season among the league's 10 best in scoring, field-gopere. centage and free-thro- w shooting percentage was Atlanta's Lou son in 1969-7- Hud- 0. games this season, Golden State's Chris Mullin was sixth in scoring, 10th in field goal percentage and seventh in free throw percentage. Meanwhile, Utah's Karl Malone is in the top 10 in three NBA statistical categories. He is second in scoring at 30.7 points per game, tied for third in field goal percentage at .584 and sixth in rebounding with 10.5 per game. Former Cougar assistant Mike Holmgren had a chance to be a head coach in the NFL, either with the New York Jets or Phoenix Cardinals, but instead remained as Through 47 offensive coordinator at San Francisco. according to The National newspaper, is money. The newspaper's Feb. 7 issues reports that 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo, Jr., apparently offered Holmgren "between $350,000 and $400,000 a year" to stay with the team. That's more money than some NFL head coaches make and twice what any NFL assistant makes. coach Bill Walsh is quoted in the article as saying he believes the report is true. Another unnamed executive said he doubted DeBartolo would give Holmgren a flat $350,000 to $400,000 base salary, although it was possible he would include a hefty bonus, yet keep the base salary in a more reasonable range. Whatever, it appears Holmgren is pretty well fixed in the Bay Area for now. Former BYU golfer Johnny Miller has been doing some commentary on NBC's golf telecasts this year. "They didn't hire me to be boring," noted Miller. "There has been a tendency in TV To be extremely nice to the point where it is too sugary. They want me to be reasonably controversial, to say things that most people haven't had the guts to say." He has, drawing some ire in the process, according to The National. At the Bob Hope Classic, he observed that Peter Jacobsen's d shot over water on a downhill lie (he needed a birdie to win), was "a perfect shot to choke on." Jacobsen nailed the shot, but took issue with Miller's use of words, as did Jack Nicklaus. Later during the tournament, the cameras got a shot of an obviously enraged Bears coach Mike Ditka. Miller quipped, "He looks like Cur- cMdEP iZZ Why? One reason, M I'sa lac ff tis Strange after a three-putt.- " Strange was not pleased, and wrote a letter complaining about the remark to PGA Tour Commissioner Deane Beman, according to The National. The average ticket price in the NBA this season, counting all seats at all price levels, is $18.98, ranging from a high of $27.75 for the Los Angeles Lakers to $12.43 for the Indiana Pacers. Salaries are rising at a similar pace. The Atlanta Hawks will pay Dominique Wilkins and Jon Koncak a combined $27 million for the next five years.
