Show Page C6 - THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Thursday, October 26, 1989 Andrews will update JekyllHyde for TV 'Baker Boys' a sexy, jazzy comedy THE FABULOUS BAKER By JERRY BUCK AP Television Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) Anthony Andrews saw his role in "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" as a man gone awry because of a drug addiction. In the presentation on Showtime's In the mood BOYS (R) for a juicy, jazzy romance with three star performances - and some hard-edge- d feeling to it? "I saw the only way to approach it was to treat it as a new exercise," said Andrews on a visit from his home in England. "We had very limited time. In fact, I didn't think at first we could do it. I tried to bring it into focus for today's audience. I had only a vague recollection of seeing Spencer Tracy in the role, so I had little in the way of preconceived notions. "I knew it had been done a lot, and when you get into it you see why. It's an interesting dilemma to play the same man twice, with a personality change. What really attracted me to the part is that it's so closely aligned with the contemporary drug addict." Dr. Henry Jekyll is a brilliant scientist, yet a shy, introverted man with a limited approach to life. He becomes addicted to a potion which releases the other side of his personality and gives him the confidence and facility to be somebody else. He becomes Edward Hyde, who is usually portrayed as a monster. "That is exactly what I didn't want to do. I tried to play him as the same man who has the suppressed side of his personality released. I didn't use any prosthetic and no obvious makeup. I used the transformation of character in front of your eyes. He is really the same man. "I'm not saying he's a nice man. He just doesn't change into a mons- Beautifully shot, the movie immerses us in the (and t) world of glitzy, smoke-fille- d clubs where you're always likely to hear one more rendition of "Feelings." day-to-d- night-by-nigh- What keeps the movie going is the charmed, uncanny chemistry between the three leads. The Bridges brothers are simply two of the best movie actors of their generation: You never catch them "acting," but when you think back on their performances, you realize you've witnessed rich, varied and distinctive characterizations. Here they bring their real-lif- e fraternal relationship to bear on two very roles. jL well-writt- As a musician who might have achieved great things had he .struck out on his own, Jeff has never been so attractive, so Photo courtesy of 20th Century Fox Jeff and Beau bridges get high marks in their first film together, "The Fabulous Baker Boys,' from 20th Century Fox. Movie Review Best of all, there's Michelle Pfeiffer as the whose sultry voice brings the brothers new attention, all the while unearthing an intense rivalry between them. Pfeiffer is absolutely er and overdoses on mood. Pfeiffer does her own vocals, and it must be said that she acts the songs better than she sings them. But musicians are likeonly hard-cor- e or care. The are some problems, particularly in the second half when the movie seems to lose momentum 'Sweeney Todd' offers good music, thrills By JEAN MARSHALL Herald Staff Writer Those students and adults who like to do something spooky around Halloween will not be disappointed in "Sweeney Todd." Opera West has ambitiously Musical Review mounted Sondheim's successful "Sweeney Todd" which is far closer Todd to opera than to typical Broadway musicals. The production is finally not as polished as one would like, but the vehicle has a creepy power of its own and the casting for looks especially is remarkable. The voices range from adequate to good, and the acting though generally competent, is occasionally either weak or overdone. Worth seeing for the Sondheim music and the offbeat combination of tragedy, humor and gore set in 19th century London, "Sweeney Todd" is perfect Halloween fare. Certainly not for small children, the tale of Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street who exacts revenge on those who wronged him builds slowly with a couple of shocks accompanied by the screeching organ along the way to the final grisly conclusion. The price of revenge is inescapably clear and the unsettling tale lingers in the memory. The drive alone gets the audience in the mood as patrons turn off of University Ave. at the 900 S. light and follow the signs across the dimly lighted railroad tracks to an old brick warehouse. The realistic setting adds to the grim atmosphere of the show. A jacket and warm socks will prove a wise precaution. Her interpretation was true to the exaggerated conventions of the English stage of the period, the "penny dreadful" (horror comics of the time) and the sensational ballads of then current crimes, but her characterization often lacked control and sometimes became distracting. M Troy Klee as Beadle Bamford and Michael D. Ensign as Pirelli both gave strong performances, and the musicians are to be commended for outstanding peformances as well. Only in a few passages did the volume obscure the voices. Unfortunately, in this production, the lyrics were not always clearly articulated. Sondheim's lyrics and music are challenging. But the words must be clearly heard, and perhaps an extra effort can be made for the remaining performances. For example, when Mrs. Lovett and Todd discuss the varieties of meat pies she might sell, the humor is lost if the words are not clear.
