Show Page G8 THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Land proposal is a good deal By JIM DONAGHY day, April 28, 1989 (Public Lands Are Just That, Not For Private Ventures). I think you need a little insight into the matter. You stated that a member of the Big Game Board from Vernal was attempting to withdraw several thousand acres of state land as a proposed hunting preserve. First of all Mr. Cunningham is not from Vernal he is from Cisco, Utah where he and his father operate Cunningham Cattle Com- pany. The Cunninghams have been trying to make a living in that area ever since their grandfather homesteaded it about 100 years ago. That was before there were elk there or before any bleeding heart hunter knew about it or even cared about it! - You are right, Mr. Collett, a lot of the proposed elk area is public land. However, over the years the public hasn't had much interest in. It remains unused except by a few deer and elk hunters who use it approximately 30 days out of the year during hunting season. What about the other 335 days a year when the Cunninghams are trying to make a living as they have been doing for the years. I don't see anybody from the public worrying about it then. And for those hunters who do use it guess where most of .them go? You guessed it. Right "down the middle of Cunninghams property. Go down there sometime and just see how nice the public leaves their campsites. They look just like a garbage , dump. Not to mention the AP Baseball Writer Dale YORK (AP) Murphy is finding the path to the Hall of Fame has a few - NEW Dear Mr. Collett: No wonder your opinion is slanted in your article dated Fri- 100 7, 196 Road to Hall of Fame has a few curves for Murphy Sports Mailbag last Sunday, May dam-- . age that gets done to the Cun-- . hingham's summer homes which fare on their own property. Mr. Collett, if you really want something to complain about then check that out. " lAU this just because some elk : migrated to the area from the Indian land. They didn't ask for the elk or the trouble they i brought. By the way, the DWR didn't even know the elk were there until the Cunninghams told them. Guess who collected the money for all the hunting that went on? You guessed it again, . V - - . the DWR. , Greg Cunningham's proposal to manage the deer and elk hunting a good idea. The DWR have j is done such a poor job they nearly f wiped out the deer herd in the I early 60s by allowing a post- season hunt in late November of I December of that year. The deer t never did recover from that, one. i Now the area is three-poior Lbetter, but that doesn't stop the with great killing of the DWR Check with regularity. or better yet take a walk out through the juniper after the rifle "season and see how many two-- ? points you see shot dead. Someone has . to take control. ; Maybe The Herald ought to find a replacement for you, just L because you are trying to make a j living writing articles without all $ the facts. ciu-ve- At 33, some consider the Atlanta outfielder to be a fading star. The Braves even came close to trading Murphy to the New York Mets during the offseason. "It was an interesting experience," Murphy said of the many trade rumors. "It was the first time anything like that happened to me." And, there was good reason why the Braves had little interest in trading Murphy before this winter. Since breaking into the Braves' lineup in 1978, Murphy has been the most popular playin good times er in Atlanta and bad. He has 338 lifetime home runs and has been a member of team seven times. the But last season, Murphy slumped to .226 with 24 homers and 77 runs batted in. In 1987, he had 44 homers and 105 RBIs. The Braves finished last in the National League West in 1988 at and were trying to peddle Murphy for some prospects at the winter meetings. "I know it happens to everybody, but I didn't think it would happen to me," Murphy said. "But I don't think it has affected me in any negative way, or caused my bad spring training and slow start. "It's a dead issue now. It's been over for five weeks. It had a life of its own for a while. I thought about the possibilities back then." When the season started, however, it seemed Murphy still had other things on his mind. In his first 27 he had three hits and no RBIs and was moved into the No. 2 slot by manager Russ Nixon on April 12 against San Diego. "I thought I'd be down in the order, not up," Murphy said. In that game, Murphy hit his first homer of the season, and has three more since. "We wanted to loosen him up a bit," Nixon said. "We wanted him to relax, to forget about the responsibility of the cleanup position. The strategy seems to be working, albeit slowly. Murphy In is hitting .223 ( games against Now York shortly after the move, he struck out six times in eight "Dale Murphy is still a dangerous hitter," Mets pitcher Dwight Gooden said. "You can't make a mistake or he'll hurt you." Then, a week later against San Diego, Murphy tied a career high with six RBIs in a game. "He has the speed and that initial aggressiveness back in his swing," Nixon said. "I always felt he would come around. He's such a streaky hitter, you just wait for him to get red hot. And he did. He just had to find himself. His biggest problem is being Dale at-bat- s. Murphy-- Murphy good to be is one of those "too true" types. But in this case, it's real. He spends hours signing autofor free and degraphs votes much of his time to charitable causes. "He puts more pressure on himself that any person I've Soft n' Gentle known. And what he demands from himself is often impossible," Nixon said. "But that's him. He doesn't know how not to work hard, or how to quit. TXKfi7i id BATHROOM xsnB He's what you want every player to model themselves after." The fact that the Braves have been a struggling club most of Murphy's career hasn't helped, either. "Murphy has a tendency to do too much," batting coach Clarence Jones said. "And that prevents him from being selective at the plate. We talked about moving closer lo the plate, moving closer to the pitcher, swinging more down on the ball. Murphy, however, disagrees that his age is showing. "I've always made adjustments," he said. "But it has nothing to do with age. I'm still in very good shape. I'm starting to feel better up at the plate. I'm making better contact, taking better swings." The Braves sure hope so. IB CHEESE DIP BUY ONE, GET 7 Oz. Pkg.
