Provo, Utah, Page 3 Singer standoff latest in polygamist conflicts SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -The bloody climax of a lSrday standoff between a extremist polygamist clan and police was just the latest chapter of a religious strife stemming from the Mormon Church's abandonment of plural marriage in 1890. Ck t "" " "" ' - . Addam Swapp was in serious but stable condition late Thursday at University of Utah Health Sciences Center and a police officer was dead following a shootout at the northern Utah farm belonging to the family of slain polygamist John Singer. Swapp purportedly believed that Singer, killed by police during an arrest attempt nine years ago, would rise from the dead to save his family and thus usher in a religious and political revolution. To bring about the confrontation he believed was necessary to resurrect Singer, Swapp allegedly bombed a Mormon chapel in Marion, about a mile from the Singer compound. John Singer, Swapp apparently believed, was the "One Mighty and Strong" Mormon Church founder Joseph Smith had predicted would come to reform an errant church in the latter days. The letter, considered scripture by Mormons, is contained in the faith's Doctrine and Convenants, Section 85. But it is the "fundamentalist Mormons," who refused to go along with the mainline church in giving up plural marriage a century ago, who embrace it with the most fervor. L.G. Otten, a religion professor at Brigham Young University, said the mainline Morso-call-ed ATF Agent Nolan Douglas displays weapons and explosives taken from the Singer home after the siege concluded Thursday morning. mon Church teaches that Smith's letter was meant for an errant bishop. In the parking lot of the bombed-ou- t chapel, some of the 300 residents of this tightly knit Mormon farming community wept upon hearing the outcome of the standoff at the clan's barricaded homestead. The clan has inhabited the mountain valley for well over a decade, and Thursday's fatal shootout was the group's second. "We're glad that this part of it is over, but we wonder if this is really the end because we thought it was over nine years ago, too," said Karen O'Driscoll, who launched a drive to raise money for the family of the slain officer. standoff in After an John 1979, polygamist Singer was killed by police outside e the clan's compound a from the church. Swapp and Mrs. Singer have been charged in the bombing. "I'm afraid it's not over," said Marion resident Valerie Yost.
