Show Thursday, April 14, 1988, THE HERALD, Provo, Utah 13A Page Winning gardener sees new challenge By TOM WALTON Herald Staff Writer Last year marked a mile- stone if Arva Jones' gardening career. The Orem woman came away with a top billing :c v --- -- j during the Daily Herald's gardening contest. But she's not about to rest on her laurels. In fact, she's starting all over with a new garden patch. "I'm a senior citizen, and I enjoy getting out and working the soil and improving it, but the old place just got to be too much. I wanted time to do other things," Jones explained. e So she left her nearly V Wit:-- f ; VST. tr- half-acr- patch complete with fruit trees, berry patches and grapevines and moved to a new home in southwest Orem where the garden spot is h of an acre. about Jones is planning to plant only vegetables in her new garden, but it has been a chore to get the patch one-fift- seed-read- y. "There were a variety of trees that didn't belong, and I had to rake up some leaves, pull out the lawn and do some pruning," she said. The garden is starting to take shape, and if her track record is any indication, the garden will be one of the neighborhood's best. However, it won't have the "showcase" feature of her g grass patch paths around the garden plots. But the new garden will use many elements that brought a bountiful harvest to her old place.
