Show Monday, November 7, Everest team receives money from man in Japan Utahns on Everest expedition members preparing to climb Mt Everest in 1992 were recently surprised to get an unsolicited donation from Ja- pan. The $1,000 donation was sparked by a recent business trip made by Utahns on Everest team member Lee McCullough who met with Japanese businessman Iwao Kaibara on a proposed business venture. "Mr. Kaibara is a client of ours and since I'm so excited about the Everest expedition and always take our Utahns on Everest with me wherever I go, I told Mr. Kaibara about our team and gave him one of our colorful rts said McCullough. McCullough, is a senior attorney at Callister, Duncan & Nebeker, a Salt Lake City professional law corporation. McCullough said after he returned to Utah, he forgot about the he had given Mr. Kaibara until one day he received a check in the mail made out to Utahns on Ever irt est. "I was really surprised be- cause I didn't ask for money. I guess it kind of means that climbing Everest, the world's tallest mountain, still has a lot of sex appeal," said McCullough. While unsolicited, the dona- tion is welcome because Utahns on Everest is in the midst of a' push. Expedition leader Douglas S. Hansen of Pleasant Grove said fund-raisi- ng the expedition is trying to raise $500,000 to outfit the team and handle the logistics and transportation. The climbing team will consist of 10 trained climbers supported by many other support team members. McCullough said that Mr. Kaibara is presi- -' dent of Boutique Shell Stone, a jewelry store located in the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Hotel in Honolulu. He said the Japanese businessman has homes located around the world and has been working with the Salt Lake City law firm, considering investment property pur- THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, 1388 Brigham Young University Earth Science Museum.
