Will an implantable artificial pancreas enable diabetics to live better lives? Can the new "relaxation response," treat- ment favored by many doctors reduce high blood pressure and even control severe pain? g These are the stories explored in the premier special of the series "Discover The World Of Science," which begins its third season Wednesday at 8 p.m. on KUED, channel 7, and Sunday at 5 p.m. on KBYU-Tchannel 11. Peter Graves thought-provokin- V, returns as the ra host and narrator. The critically acclaimed science series magazine-styl- e is composed of five one-ho- ur specials. Each episode includes four or five stories dealing with science, medicine and nature. Presented with a distinctly human perspective, the stories are tailored for a general audience interested in discovering the wonders of our world. The season's premiere special takes viewers to the Florida Coast where some of the friendliest wild animals on earth, the manatees, are in danger of extinction as a result, in part, of their insatiable curiousity. The manatees are shallow water creatures, unafraid of man or boat. In Florida's crowded waters, the result is that most of the 40 or so animals killed each year by man's activities die in collisions with boats. Every year the toll goes up. Viewers can see the work of research teams as they struggle to capture and track the animals. From Florida the special travels to, Camp Joslin, where youngsters frolic in the sun and enjoy camping even though everyone there is diabetic. In addition to having fun, these youngsters are also learning how to stay alive. The special also visits with old Jim Worden, a who designed and engineered the solar racing car for the y Tour de Sol car race in Switzerland last spring. 19-ye- ar six-da- When can I see 'Candidate?' By DICK KLEINER Dear Dick: Will the movie "The Manchurian Candidate" be shown on TV any time soon? I understand the movie has, in effect, been banned, ostensibly due to a copyright or contract dispute. Also, what is director John role in any such dispute? J.H., Houston. Dear J.H.: United Artists tells me there is no dispute, just a hard, cold fact of corporate life. Frank Sinatra, who starred in that brilliant film, owns all the rights that was in the terms of his and, for original contract whatever reason, refuses to let it be shown. Dear Dick: Would you please settle a $100 bet. We're talking to a large segment of society which believes it is not at risk. It is at risk." . The message of the documentary is simple: Not only intravenous drug-user- s and male homosexuals are at risk from AIDS and barring the unrealistic option of abstinence, using a condom is the best way for sexually active adults to prevent the spread of AIDS. "AIDS: Changing The Rules" can be expected to generate extraordinary atten- tion, controversy, and even some ideological debate. Parental discretion is advised.
