Show Tuesday, April About Town The Fisheries and Wildlife Faculty Award went to Benjamin Morris; Payson, at the awards banquet for Utah State University Natural Resources Week recently. Brent K. Pope, has completed requirements for a master of science degree in nutrition and food sciences at Utah State University. "Pope, a son of Karl T. and Connie Pope, Provo, attended Timpview High School. He received a bachelor of science degree in biology at USU in 1985. Pope and his wife, Jean Welsh, formerly of Orem, have one child. Richard Wesley Later, M.D., Payson, was elected to Fellowship in .the American Academy of Pediatrics at a recent meeting of the AAP Executive Board. To qualify as a Fellow of the Academy, a pediatrician must have been certified as a d specialist in the field of child health. The National Council of Teachers of English announces the appointment of Afton M. Miner, Brigham Young University, Provo, as a regional judge for the 1987 NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing. Through this competition, high school seniors are cited for excellence in writing and are recommended to colleges and universities for admission. Recognition of outstanding performance by young high school students took place at a recent breakfast meeting of the Timpano-go- 5 Kiwanis Club. These young men have had outstanding experiences and opportunities such as Craig Axford of Provo Stake who is interested in politics and has received an Eisenhower Foundation award for a trip to Russia. Alan D. Williams of Provo Central Stake is of Comanche and Navaho parentage and is listed in the Who's Who of high school students. James "Bo" Tucker of South Stake decided to jog scout instead of walk on a hike. John Murphy of St. Francis Catholic Church attended Boy's of his State and is editor-in-chihigh school newspaper. Wayne Manning of the Oak Hills Stake has aspirations to be an astronaut and is a nominee for the Air Force Academy. Vince Liddaird of Provo South Stakp v,aS mayor of Boy's State. This program known as "Spiritual Aims" awards is held once a year and is directed by Dr. Robert Hales with Dr. Douglas Bennion. The Utah Society of Hospital Social Work Directors recently elected Jay Steineckert as president of the organization. He currently serves as administrative director of Behavioral Health Services at American Fork Hospital. ;The USHSWD is a statewide organization that unifies and promotes social work services in hospitals. Claude E. Hanyon has been selected as the outstanding employee for the first quarter of 1987 at Orem Community Hospital. "Hanyon has worked at OCH longer than any other employee, starting out as a housekeeper before the hospital was officially opened. In 1986, he was appointed as the coordinator for the facility. Dean Bruce N. Smith of the College of Biology and Agriculture has announced the appointment of Wilford M. Hess as chairman of the Department of Botany and Range Science at Brigham Young University. THess will serve a three-yea- r "term beginning Sept. 1. ;Hess's research specialty is in the ultrastructure of fungal spores. He has received more than $500,000 in research grants to support his studies and has hosted an international symposium on fungal spore research. Eight Utah Valley residents were among the 136 students who received Juris Doctor degrees recently in the 12th graduating class of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University. Barlow of Chevy Chase, Md., received the Franklin S. "But this will be an even more concentrated effort to see our students and our school benefit by interaction with volunteers." The ALERT program calls for school, staff, inservice, volunteer recruitment, training, and recognition, and a rethinking of volunteer programs in the schools. "Volunteers come from all sectors of Provo's community," Harrington said. "We look forward to tutoring in math and reading, to writing assistance for our students to business-schoo- l partner "Grandma," and a parent reading tutor all have one thing in common: they are volunteers at Sunset View Elementary in Provo. Talented and willing community members frequent the classrooms at the school, donating time and materials to assist students in their learning. And now Sunset View will be making additional efforts to involve volunteers. The school has been selected to participate in Gov. Norman Bangerter's ALERT program on educational reform in the area of volunteerism. one-on-o- ships wherein we can be of service and can benefit local businesses as we learn from them, and to utilizing the unique talents of community members." But volunteers are nothing new in the hallways of Sunset View. Two senior citizens, or "Grandmas" as they are called by first graders, spend four hours every day reading and listening to eager learners. Ream's Market. The Alpine House, Hamburger World and Hardee's Restaurant among others, have offered certificates, goods, and tours to provide incentives for Sunset View's reading, PE, accelerated learning, and citi 1M ALERT program zenship programs. Several guests have come in to share volunteer instruction in opera, ballet, Spanish instruction and handicapped awareness. Others, such as BYU football players, have come to ignite the desire in students to learn, read, or avoid drugs and harmful substances. In addition. Sunset View PTA's formal organization has donated 1.200 hours this year alone in proand classroom viding social activities. Margarett PTA president, sees the ALERT program as a "an opportunity to work side by side with other volunteers in the school." "Our children really benefit by additional adults in the school. e and They need the small group instruction, along with the interaction with community adults," Rasmussen said.
