Provb.'Utah PageSA nasazi Ruins Attractive Hme State Experience By JOSEPHINE ZIMMERMAN Herald Staff Writer i Long before the river runners, or jeep drivers explored the area, ancient Indians inhabited the entire Canyonlands region where the towns of Blanding, Bluff, Mexican Hat, Moab and Monticello are now located. The Anasazi, or "ancient ones" were cliff dwellers who lived for approximately 1,500 in the area. Present day Navajo and Hopi Indians are believed to be descendants of the Anasazi. Cliff dwellings, cabes, pottery shards, pictographs and petro-glyph- s can be found throughout the area. No one knows exactly why the Anasazi left the area in the 13th century. Some say they were driven out by nomadic paople or hostile Indians. Others believe they were forced out by drought or disease. Some believe a climatic shift and disastrous floods washed away all their crops. In Blanding an historical Anasazi village is located adjacent to the Edge of the Cedars State Historical Monument. This village was occupied from about 75 A.D. to 1220 A.D. and consists of six residential and ceremonial complexes. Formal excavation was begun in the 1960s, but much is still left to be uncovered. The actual museum was constructed with the objective of preserving and interpreting the cultural history of the Anasazi, Ute and Navaho 4 years aiMrjfc r- in ii Scattered throughout San Juan county are literally hundreds of ruins, pictograph and petroglyph panels of the Anasazi. Indians, as well as the early white pioneers and settlers. The museum houses the collection Shumway of Indian pottery and has interpretive ex- hibits, research and work rooms, and a gift shop. Indian objects and handiwork are widely available throughout the Canyonlands region. From Moab to Mexican Hat and inside Monument Valley, small trading posts dot the towns. Indian rugs and baskets, jewelry and pottery of all types can be found. Car Cooling System Trouble Hints warning lights in many cars do iTte' Fort trUble cars, TP " .p00r 100 -- load.
