Show Sunday, September 7, 2003 Dealing with an indolent teenager Dear Drs. Paul and Terie, We have a son who is respectful and mature in public, does well in school and in leadership positions. However, at home he will not do his chores without numerous promptings, or he may simply not do them. He will not get up in the morning, even after his alarm clock rings, and I have made several trips to his room. He will not be ready to go somewhere when we need to leave. He will not follow simple rules like "No TV until homework or chores are done." The minute I leave the house, he does what he wants. I have let him sleep in and end up late for school, made him walk to school when he missed his ride. He has missed activities because his chores were not done. He gets very angry and it makes the whole family miserable, but it doesn't seem to do any good. I find myself in a power struggle over everything. I feel angry at his reluctance to do what he should. It always seems to place more work on someone else when he doesn't follow through. His older and younger siblings seem to be. able to handle their responsibilities and chores, so J don't feel we are asking too much of him. Can you help? Dear Concerned Parent, With indolent teenagers we usually use a list of likes and dislikes to determine their consequences and rewards. The first objective is to determine what motivates your child (e.g., money, extra time with friends, movies, staying up late, etc.). Next, be creative and set up specific consequences based on his likes and dislikes and do not just rely on natural or logical consequences. For the chore . problem consider making up a list of extra chores that need to be done. Every time he needs more than one prompting to do his Paul & Terie Wiederhold : Just Ask Booth Moore LOS ANGELES Like many Hollywood events, the inaugural "Rodeo Drive Walk of Style" awards ceremony was canceled last March after the United States went to war against Iraq.
