Amid all the activity one player, defensive end Shawn Knight, sat in a window seat sound asleep. After the plane stopped on the ground outside Key Airlines in Salt Lake City, Knight still slept as the others prepared to debark. Actually, someone could have sung, "The Party's Over" at halftime in the football game in Lobo Stadium. In the second quarter of what was once expected to be "The Shootout in the WAC Corral" for all the horses, the Cougars broke from a tenuous 0 lead to a 24-- 0 bulge and it was time to turn out the lights. " Back in late August, Sports Illustrated predicted that New Doug Und Photos Heimuli slashes through the Lobo line for a chunk of his but we aren't at this time." The Lobos jumped off to a 0 record including a WAC win over UTEP. At that time it appeared as if BYU and New Mexico might make it to their meeting unbeaten and set the stage for one of the nation's top battles. ESPN looked ahead and booked the game for television. But then things started to unravel for the Lobos. They were beaten by Utah and star linebacker Johnny Jackson was lust wiUi an ankle fracture. CSU upset them in Albuquerque, and quarterback Buddy Funk was lost with a broken leg shortly before the game ended. Then the Lobos went to the cold of old Wyoming and lost the and the services of game, star cornerback Ray Hornfeck. Mexico would win the WAC and that BYU was in a rebuilding year and would finish third. The day the magazine hit the newsstands, the WAC Skywriters were in Albuquerque talking to Lobo coach Joe Lee Dunn. Asked about the prediction, Dunn said: "I haven't seen the article, but someone told me about it. I can tell you that we are not a good football team right now. We might be later, 4-- 38-1- 4 59-2- ' P v III" w- " " I I, ; - 1 1 jj They were the big Injuries but not the only ones and the Lobos went into Thursday night's televised game a badly decimated team. Jackson did play briefly, but left the field on a cart. Dunn, who said earlier this week that he was going to take a more active role in coaching the defense and told his defensive aides that they had to produce or get out, used only a two-maline with as many as nine linebackers or defensive backs most of the night and once had only one downlineman, the nose guard, in the fray. This took the Cougars a while to solve and in the first quarter the only score came on a seven-yar- d Robbie Bosco to Glen pass that climaxed a drive on BYU's first possession. Kicker Lee Johnson boosted field th.s to 10-- with a in second the goal quarter and a ace Vai then broke one. Vai took the ball on Lobo 47 and ran it back for a touchdown. Johnson added the PAT and it was 17-- and no contest. "Sikahema's return of that punt for a touchdown was a big play for us," coach LaVell Edwards said afterward. In the third period, Heimuli raced 33 yards to a touchdown, field Johnson kicked a goal, Bosco passed to Kozlowski for 10 yards and a touchdown and later hit Koz from three yards for the final score. Pete Rossi kicked the final PAT. BYU stayed almost exclusively on the ground in the second half. The Cougars threw only 10 passes in the second half and only three after Bosco's last TD throw to Koz. The Cougars rushed 48 times for 250 yards and passed 32 times for 240. Bosco left the game with 6:34 remaining in the third period. He was 9 for 227 yards and three touchdowns. He wasn't intercepted. Blaine Fowler took over from him and for 13 yards. was Kozlowski was named ESPN's offensive player of the game with 53 yards and three touchdowns on six receptions. Heimuli ruUied for 144 yards on 19 carries. Freshman runner 19-2- Fred Whittingham rushed 10 times for 38 yards. At one time in the game, Heimuli carried the ball four consecutive times, rested while Bosco hit running back Robert Parker with an pass, then carried again. BYU's defenders gave the Lobos only 214 yards, 116 rushing and 98 passing. Linebackers Marv Allen and Kurt Gouveia each intercepted a Lobo pass. The Lobos fumbled the ball seven times and BYU recovered five of these. At one stretch, Nt,v Mexico turned the ball over on six straight possessions losing the ball by fumble, fumble, fumble, interception, fumble, fumble. The Lobos' Willie Turral, the WAC's leading rusher, was held to 49 yards on 14 rushes. "I thought our defense played a great game," Edwards said. "BYU just outclassed us," Dunn said. Now the Cougars have a weekend off. They can wait for the outcome of the San Diego State vs. Hawaii game Saturday night and then turn all their attention on UTEP. The loss leaves New Mexico in the overall and at WAC And they must play at Baylor next week, get Air Force in Albuquerque, then finish on the road against San Dtego State and Hawaii. They are already talking basketball and avoiding Spurts Illustrated in Albuquerque. 4 4 NFL Coach seasons. Utah Jazz Suspend Dantley SALT LAKE CITY (UPI) -The Utah Jazz Thursday suspended NBA scoring champion Adrian Dantley, who has yet to report to the team because of a dispute over his contract. Jazz President David Checketts announced the decision to suspend Dantley over his failure to report to training camp and his boycott of all nine preseason games. "Adrian Dantley has been placed on the suspended list for failure to report for training camp, the pre-seaso- n schedule and the regular season," Checketts said. "We have a active roster and we'll go on from here." Dantley, whose 30.6 points per game led the NBA last season, is under contract with Utah for this season. NBA bylaws allow the suspension of a player for failure to fullfil his contract, said Jazz spokesman Bill Kreifeldt. Jazz coach-GFrank Layden, reached at his hotel in Seattle where the team is preparing for its season-opene- r tonight, said there will be no further talks with Dantley. "He owes us a year. He should come and play," Layden said. "There will be no talks." Layden said the team would like to have Dantley play, but is ready to go without him.
