At least, this is the surgery team you see. less visible, but no less critical part of each surgery at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center are the 32 Central Professing employees who clean and sterilize all surgical and medical equipment and supplies. "The importance of sterilization in surgery simply cannot be overstated," says Roberta Gourley, director of Central Processing at UVRMC. "In fact, most modern surgical procedures are possible only because we can achieve a totally sterile environment." A normal, healthy body's immune system can usually combat most infection, sometimes with the" help of antibiotics. The natural immunity of a surgical patient, however, is first compromised by the disease or injury and secondlly by the invasive surgical procedure itself. Further, if ,L W lubri- water-solubl- e because petroleum products strongly resist sterilization. The Central Processing technicians then sort and compile everything in'o instrument packs. Each type of surgical procedure' requires a different set of tools, and individual surgeons may also have personal preferences. "There are literally thousands of instruments to learn," says Gourley. "The supervisors go over and over them, training and guiding new employees." A sterilization test indicator is included in each surgical pack, to be inspected by the scrub nurse upon receipt in the operating room. The pack is also sealed with a steam-resistatape that changes color during processing nt cleaned," explains Gourley. Then, everything is run through a washer-sterilizsimilar to a dishwasher. At this point, all contaminated matter is gone and the equipment is safe to handle. A f to indicate sterility. Readings on the sterilizer (or, autoclave) itself give another "check," as do chemical tests placed inside the autoclave with each load. If any one of these tests fail, everything must be completely cleaned and reprocessed. Most surgical tools and linens can be processed in steam autoclaves, using a as formula in P pressure cooking or home can Herald Staff Writer Provo beer retailers have impressed undercover Provo police reagents with their tough-nose- d fusal to sell beer to minors. And if cold, rather warm gas must be used, the equipment must aerate at room temperature for seven days. "We use steam whenever possible because it's cheaper, quicker, and safer for our staff," says Gourley. The Central Processing technicians keep meticulous records of their work so that if any defect is found in the quality control tests themselves, the unsterile materials can be immediately recalled. Every item that undergoes sterilization is recorded in a log with the processing date, expiration date (six months), initial of technician, autoclave number and load number. "The workers have to be bright and attentive," says Gourley. "There's no room for carelessness or forgetfulness." Many of the Central Processing technicians are graduates of Brigham Young University and some are working on masters degrees. The others have had advanced technical training in sterilization techniques. "They all understand why they have to do what they do and the great responsibility they bear," adds Gourley.
