Today Editor There's more to consider when choosing a doctor than the location of his medical office, the price of a visit or the title after his name. Health care experts say consumers need to ask specific questions about their doctors to make sure they are receiving the type of care which best meets their needs Some experts suggest consumers select a general physician, not a specialist, as their regular doctor According to medical writer Jane Brody in a recent Family Circle magazine article, "How to Choose and Use your Doctor," patients should not assume a specialist is able to best meet all of their medical needs. For example. Brody says a gynecologist may not know much more than your next door neighbor about how to best treat a cough, what to do for an aching back or how to determine the cause of chronic of dergone years ist to see because of the location of their symptoms However, symptoms can be misleading For example, symptoms in the abdomen can be caused by various ailments only indirectly related to the digestive tract, preselecting a specialist in that area may send you down a blind medical alley. Other points to be aware of when selecting a doctor are: Check educational background and other credentials. W; Bp j Ann Landers Word Usage Experts Should Use a Little Tact Dear Ann Landers: May I say a word to those who feel they must correct the mispronunciations of others? Do it privately and use a little tact, please. Making sure you heard correctly is not a bad idea, either. I had one of those know-it-acorrection nuts interrupt me during a presentation. He just yelled out the word and it threw me completely off balance. Actually, I knew the correct pronunciation but erred due to nervousness. I stumbled through the rest of my talk and have not opened up my mouth in public since. Shamed Into Silence Dear S.I.S.: You didn't ask for advice but I happen to have a little lying around. Don't let that clod defeat you. Accept every opportunity to speak In public and practice, practice, practice! Turn that disaster into a triumph, and when you see the fellow who embarrassed you, think of him as a friend. Dear Ann Landers: I am getting married soon and my father is paying for the wedding. We have always gotten along well, but one subject has been the ll source of trouble, and now it is coming to a head. He does not want me to invite any black people to my wedding. I work with both black and white and would feel awful leaving some of my colleagues out. ConPlease advise soonest. fused In The Midwest. Dear CM.: Invite whomever you please. It's your wedding. If your father refuses to pay for it, have a simple ceremony in the home of a friend. Serve lemonade and cookies or whatever you and your fiance can afford. Your integrity is more Important than a fancy wedding. Dear Ann Landers: I grew up in a family ruled by a tyrannical father. None of us brothers or sisters are close, which is just as well. We never got along when we were growing up. There never was open warfare, just indifference. Our father died several-yearago and mother is 91 years old. She has been in a nursing home for quite some time. My husband and I are concerned because mother has not made any plans s for her funeral. All she says is, "Everything will work out in due r - mSmm time," The real problem is my brothers and sisters. They refuse to sit down with us and discuss the matter. We are afraid they have no idea what funerals cost these days, especially when there is no insurance to cover the transportation charges for carrying the body 600 miles. (Mother wants to be buried next to father.) We fear there will be gross overspending and we will be asked to come up with our share, which we won't be able to afford. None of us is well off. One sister and I are fighting to stay off welfare. Is there any way to solve this problem and keep the peace? Nervous In Nebraska Dear Neb: Since no one in the family seems interested in planning for an event that is inevitable, I suggest that you go ahead and do it. When the time comes, tell your brothers and sisters you have saved them a lot of work and worry. They should be grateful.
