Sometimes it can get real personal. This time, it's personal. Wife Leiloni, now 64. was a pert, pleasant, helpful young married when I worked as a summer intern in Detroit for Ford Motor Company. Leiloni then made out family group sheets and a chart I still Eicture pedigree asked my mom all the questions. Filled in everything. I was as interested in genealogy as the average rock. She made phone calls, heard we needed to talk with Perrv Tripp in Cleveland. She called him. We all talked. Perry had never heard of me, certainly not of Leiloni. He explained he had considerable records of the Tripp family. He welcomed our suggested visit. Leiloni and I zipped southward to Cleveland, 180 miles away, the next weekend. Perry and Dorothy, his wife, welcomed us. invited us to stay overnight in their , Bpacious home. Perry, pipe smokin', spread out before him his family treasures, leaned back in an easy chair. "Yup, Thomas Tripp is your He droned on. I got interested in genealogy. It gotpersonal. Perry told me how Thomas Tripp and wife Nancy came to Michigan in September 1836 with nine children. They came by covered wagon from Seneca County, New York. Michigan became a state in 1835. Land opportunities opened up when a territory became a state. Thomas and Nancy settled in Saline, just west of Detroit, a stone's throw from Ann Arbor. Perry showed me the family bible of Thomas' son, James William Tripp. The cover came off from the bible. Perry allowed me to borrow the cover, said he wanted it to go to his Bon, James. Perry gave me pictures made in the 1880s. Perry gave me an original sheet of paper inserted into the bible that listed all the children of Thomas and Nancy. Mighty fine. There's more. I found out Nancy was a Stevenson from Ireland, later got her lineage back five more generations. I got the Tripp line back to John the Founder, then three generations more. Found the Affidavit of John, written about 1668, in the New Bedford Library, Massachusetts. And, there's more. And more. OK, do I thank Perry? Yes. Perry opened a great big door. But, you know, there was a beautiful young vibrant girl who without a desire for recognition, got me started. Brown eyes, bouncing pony tail, stunning, Leiloni those first Suit together group sheets, made that picture pedigree chart, and called Perry. And Leiloni and I were off on a genealogy safari to Cleveland, then onward to life. That life now includes five children, their twelve a bushel, no, a train-ca- r load of memories. Yeah, genealogy got real ruses, personal. You can see why it still is. Copyright 2002 Paul Tripp. c.Ntr. Richard C. Clyde and Patricia T.
