June 21, 21)02 Tin- 'Juwanna Mann' has nothing new to boast By RASMI S1MHAN Sports have rules, but that doesn't mean all games are the same. At their best, they're a configuration of players whose fates may change in the final seconds. Hollywood has its usual devices, and "Juwanna Mann" follows every one. As a result, the movie is predictable and not particularly near-explosi- funny. Miguel A. Nunez Jr. plays the dual role of Jamal Jeffries, a basketball player whose ego gets him tossed from the league and Juwanna Mann, whose wig and falsies allow him to play for a women's team. This transformation spurs a score of boob jokes and some time in a chicken suit. Finally, the lovely captain (Vivica A. KNTI KV VAI.I R that men's basketball Fox) teaches Jamal that only team players succeed. After he exposes his true identity on the game floor, he humbly returns to men's basketball. And he gets the girl (plus an eyeful of several others in the locker room). Basketball fans should know there's little game play except a ft?w lofty leaps and slam dunks. The film, directed by Jesse Vaughan, mostly runs the gamut of drag jokes en route to the ending. Drag is a funny thing, and not because falsies slide or straight men might be attracted. It's a carniva-lesqu- e reversal of reality that can reveal a new way, of looking at things, as in Shakespeare's comedy warm-and-fuzz- y y KKM (.AM.VWarncr the game: In Vivica A. However, the word "teamwork" in this film is shorthand for passing the ball, and Juwanna hardly interacts with anyone except the captain unless she's grabbing their rear ends or ogling them in the showers. The jokes about Magda Rowonowitch, an Eastern European team member, were particularly offensive. Magda is overgrown, smelly and shaves her upper lip regularly. When told about Juwanna's anatomical difference, she says that where she comes from, it wouldn't be a prob less-glitz- fa' lem for women even her mother had one. Why a'dd cultural stereotypes to sexism? The performances are relatively high points in the low comedy. Nunez, who can also be seen in "Scooby-.Doo,- " has a knack for physical humor and timing, if only to knee a besotted suitor where it hurts. Fox looks good, but she isn't given much to do. Games can bring out the best and the worst in players. In turn, certain players can, by their very excellence, define and redefine the sport itself. That's why it's disappointing when filmmakers throw a few e actors and cameos at a hokey script. The game is over before it begins. D "Twelfth Night."
