Most of the larger bass are in deep water and are difficult to catch. The smaller fish are aggressive, though, and it's hard to keep them off your hook. Other anglers report seeing striper boils each morning in the back of Bullfrog Bay, between 6 and 8 a.m., and then each evening from 5 until dark. Reports are that shad are still thick in spots and when trapped in coves or off points, the fishing action can be Grubs, topwater baits, and spinnerbaits thrown in and on the edges of boils, produce stripers to 10 h pounds and some h bass. This is an attempt to get a handle on the exploding population of smallies in the lake. It is not uncommon for people to catch dozens of smallmouths which compete with larger fish for the available forage, says a spokesman for the DWR. HELPFUL HINTS: Fishing for smallmouths is very easy this time of year. Locate a rock slide in any of the many canyons or along the main channel of Lake Powell. Usually, the bass are in water as shallow as one foot, all the way down to 40 feet, and sometimes even deeper. On a spinning rod, tie a round head grub hook, and a plastic grub in any color from white to black, and throw the bait right to the shore. Then, swim the grub slowly back to the boat, letting it drift naturally down the contour of the rock pile as it falls. Smallmouths will eat the grub with wild abandon. Even those who normally fish for trout are impressed with the aggressive nature of smallmouth Larry 34-un- The town of Scofield is 90 minutes southeast of Provo, following Highway 6 up Spanish Fork Canyon.
