And companies that have raced to introduce such products to sometimes the market without a firm business need to plan in place determine how much consumers want to pay. "I think the wildcard is ple ready for it all? Are they going to change their lives enough to absorb all the technology or will Michael Powell ! they reject it?" Powell said in an interview Thursday with The Associated Press. "We are pushing a whole lot of stuff at people." Already, some families are forking over hundreds of dollars a month to stay wired with, cell phones, fax Intermachines, net connections and cable TV. It's a big chunk of the budget in. his household, which is with communications devices, Powell said. He questioned how much disposable income people will want to spend, even as high-spee- d well-stock- they try to determine the benefit they derive from new services. "I really think we can lose productivity," he said. "Technology are tools. They are not processes," Powell said each member of his staff prefers certain gadgets, such as interactive pager, wireless phone or which makes it tricky to figure out who wants to get what where. "We've got all this junk, and I can't find anybody," Powell quipped. The transition to a new digital world is made difficult in part because Americans have enjoyed a telecommunications system that's the envy of the world. to move Disrupting that on to something better causes some degree of. worry, he said. "We are deeply saddled with the success of the past," Powell said. The government is likely to favor letting the marketplace decide winners and losers, but as consumers one make this switch that can be compared to the Industrial Revolution, in governPowell's view ment will play a role 'as well. "We are a key place for helping be a forum and a voice and even a regulator," he said. However, the FCC has taken a more hands-of- f approach in recent years to its oversight of emerging technologies, such as highspeed Internet access delivered over cable lines. While basic phone service is kept affordable for all Americans through a complex subsidy system administered by the government, Powell doesn't see the need for that yet in some emerging technologies. For examInterple, rates for dial-unet access continue to drop, he said. p Graying heartland struggles to retain young workers names president Nu Skin The Daily Herald PROVO Nu Skin, the personal care division of Nu Skin Enterprises, appointed Lori Hermelin Bush as president. Lund, Nu Skin Enterprises president and chief executive officer. "Her experience in the industry has been and will continue to be a tremendous asset." Bush has served as vice president of marketing for the Nu Skin Division since March 2000. WASHINGTON (AP) Young adults are moving away from small cities and towns in America's heartland, leaving behind elderly residents and officials struggling to prevent their communities from eroding into modern-da- y ghost towns. Some movers sought warmer winters, while many others left for a job. Whatever the reason, they are following a path out of the region that has been wellrtraveled for decades. New 2000 census figures spotlight this trend during a decade in which population increased across the South and West, as well as some urban centers in the Midwest. For instance, of the 99 counties in which 4 percent of residents were 85 or older, all but two (in Virginia and Florida) are in the Great; Plains. Most of them . are in rural areas. Nationally, 1.5 percent of Americans are 85 or older. "There is a swath of rural and small towns that are on the potential 'ghost town' list, destined to a virtual extinction," demographic University of Michigan demographer William Frey said. "It's likely many of these towns will simply die out, as fewer young people remain or locate there." The Great Plains, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, stretch from North Dakota and parts of Montana and Minnesota south into central Texas and a portion of eastern New Mexico. Americans age 65 and over make up 12.4 percent of the U.S. population. Florida, a longtime destination for new retirees, had the highest percentage among states, at 17.6 percent.
