Show "Hie are dedicated to the public interest, to "fairness and accuracy, to innovation and growth, and to the restless pursuit of excellence." Pulitzer mission statement EDITOR: DONALD W. MEYERS OPINIO!sTS A6 SATURDAY, JUNE 2, 2001 THE DAILY HERALD (www.HarkTheHerald.com) 4 "TT Dancing is better than doing drugs The Bill and Vickie Lund family, of Orem, may have started a delightful new fad or social custom in going to special pains to make last Christmas especially memorable for their grandchildren. In the process they introduced these grandkids to what may be called a "pj parade." They showed these children how to dress up in colorful pajamas and enjoy a holiday evening of what could loosely be called "dancing." "Dancing" meant boys and girls shuffling, gliding, hopping, jumping or simply getting about the Lund living room in whatever fashion they preferred accompanied by loud music such as rock or jazz. Admittedly, the pj parade is not yet a wildly popular art form. But it might just become popular with time and exposure,, like the jitterbug, the Charleston, the Virginia reel, the square dance and the limbo have been, thanks to patrons. Besides participating in the Lund pj parade, the Lund 7f mm.9jlviw 1 I MAY&E THIS MY TURN same-desig- n grandchildren are regularly feted at family birthday parties staged by the Lunds' oldest daughters, Jennifer and Julie. Explains Bill Lund, the patriarch of the clan: "We are kind of a Kool-Aihouse, meaning all the neighbor kids come over to be with our kids. Our grandkids d are Mckenna, 11; Dallin, 9; Sidney, 6; Hayden, 7; Sterling, 6; and Conner, 4." Incidentally, Bill has run an optical shop from the same University Avenue location in Provo for the past 30 years. "We bought from the Gap pajamas with stars that glow in the dark. Everybody had the same style of pajamas, including all the adults," Bill said. "We had just bought a new DVD player. So we turned the music up real high, and we Ed Haroldsen exposed the pajamas to the light, then we turned the lights off and the stars glowed in the . dark." "We joined hands and danced in a circle in the living room, listening to rock music for a good two hours." One little niece that was visiting, Cesilie Robertson, said it was, the "most fun she had ever had for Christmas." Parents can hardly be blamed if they express deep concern about the future of their children. Certainly a lot of kids are getting into problems every day. Thus, parents are challenged to make life in their families so much fun; then their kids will have little energy or interest in getting involved in modern plagues such as drugs. The Lunds have a great idea of how to encourage young people to avoid messing up their lives: Keep them occupied with constructive activities like the - pj . tipping the sci ., Ed Haroldsen is an emeritus professor of communications at Brigham Young University. "Years ago legislators in most states approved seat-beand helmet laws because we all share in costs after a death or severe injury. And motorcyclists tend to be young men of an age likely not to have insurance and of an age more prone to take risks. Florida legislators knew that and repealed the law anyway. The result was an immediate, huge increase in head injuries and costs to hospitals. But the illusion of personal "freedom" was t deemed more important. This Irepeal must be repealed. lt . In Mary-- . land, which has been particularly aggressive about implementing the legislation, more than 100 schools have been identified as troubled, the majority of them in Baltimore. ... But the current law contains serious limitations that Congress, which is now debating of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, should fix. For one thing, the law requires local officials to allow transfers only within school districts, a major limitation for students living in urban districts with few schools to choose among. For another, the law permits good schools to refuse to educate children from failing schools because of space limitations. ... Now conservatives concede that for people in distressed neighborhoods, a system of compulsory assignment based on residence is inherently unfair. It is up to Congress to take the outline of a good idea more choice for kids stuck in bad schools and make it a vehicle for genuine equal educational opportunity. high-quali- ifi - lliif Mm Jl V .V j:V- -- uses; i'tf nfra ty This editorial recently appeared in The (Baltimore) Sun.
