Show Pape HERALD, Provo. Utah, Thursday, October 11. 1979 16-- THE I Former ASU Track Star Sets Sights on Gold Medals - NEW YORK Although Herman Frazier demonstrated a gift for athletics throughout high school, he never showed any inclination toward or interest in running. A guard on his high school basketball squad as a sophomore and a left fielder on the varsity baseball team the following year, he also made the track team in his junior year as a high jumper. In Frazier's senior year, the track team held a special decathlon to determine whether its members had talent in any area outside their specialties. Frazier did well in the 400 and that started him on the road which ultimately led to a bronze medal in the 400 and a gold medal in the relay in the previous showing. ' Last time I went to the Olympics I didn t know what I was doing, yet I managed to win a bronze and a gold. Now that I know what I'm doing mv aim is to win two golds." Frazier, ranked eighth in the United States and 13th in the world in 1978. is currently the assistant athletic director at ASU. his alma mater. He continues to participate in trark meets as a graduate student, but the competition is not the same as on the level. undergraduate "I definitely miss college meets. Track and field is stressed on the college level much more so than on 1600-met- the level. e 1976 Olympics. in i f It was quite an achievement, considering he only began running four years earlier. "1 remember it all distinctly," says Frazier, now a graduate student in public administration at Arizona State University and a member of the Philadelphia Pioneers. "I wasn't picked to win anything in the 400 and I'm a person who loves to beat the odds. It was an especially great feeling for me because i only began running in 1972 and there I was representing my country and winning two medals. It was quite a thrill. Frazier, who won a gold medal as a member of the United States relay team in the Pan Am Games, now has his sights set on the 1980 Olympics at Moscow where he hopes to improve on his i h "I have improved mentally and physically since had a real good indoor season this year and became the American record holder in the 500 meters. But my outdoor competition has suffered, because I don't get to compete as much." A couple of years ago Frazier took up bobsledding and is seriously weighing the possibility of doubling in the Summer and Winter Olympics. 1976. I "I'm giving a lot ot thought to trying out for the bobsledding team. If I make it, I'll cut out the indoor track season next year. Bobsledding will help my running because it'll make me stronger just as if I were lifting weights. And I'll continue to run even though I won't be competing." 1600-met- THESE ARE THE WINNERS of the Geneva Recreation Association tennis tournament.
