This month, the men who live on the eastern edge of downtown Los Angeles and call the missions home have been plagued not only by despair, but also by fear. More than 6,000 Skid Row residents ate the traditional feast Thanksgiving morning, just hours after the discovery that one more of their number had apparently become the 10th victim of the Skid Row Stabber. Police say the man responsible for the slayings " In exactly one month he pleasure in killing 10 men living on Skid Row. has allegedly killed "Maybe it's hard for the economically deprived, the alcoholic and the unemployed to give thanks," Rev. Fred Jordan told his audience at an outdoors Thanksgiving service before the day's largest holiday meal. "But we can still give thanks today." Jordan, noting that the man convicted of the Skid Row Slasher slayings last year had stayed several months at his Church in the Home Mission, said there was cause to give thanks even after bizarre and mass murders. "Perhaps because of the Hillside Strangler," he explained, "some women will be safer and the police will be more alert and concerned about rape. "Perhaps because of the Slasher and the Stabber. there'll be some concern about these 12 square blocks, about men who are potential criminals when they are hungry and out of work. "Perhaps because of Rev. James Jones and the People's Temple, the whole nation will be shaken up to see what can happen when people go haywire." As Jordan spoke, the service was interrupted by word of still another stabbing just around the corner. He later learned that the victim had survived with only a leg wound, and that the attack apparently had no connection with the Skid Row Stabber. "We do not condone any kind of violence," Jordan added, "but we can give thanks today because maybe something is happening that will shake up America. And we can give thanks today because we will take care of our people." After the message, visiting gospel singers sang as a crew of 100 volunteers served the turkey dinners to 3,000 men, plus several hundred women and children, sitting in chairs set up on two streets cordoned off for the occasion More than 3,000 more pushed back the same fears and enjoyed similar meals turkey, dressing, mashed and sweet potatoes, peas, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie - at the Midnight Mission and Union Rescue Mission nearby e In St. Louis Newspaper Strike Negotiations Set ST. LOUIS (UPI) Two interim newspapers may appear on newstands next week to fill the void left by the shutdown of the city's two daily papers by a pres- smen's strike. Federally mediated negotiations are scheduled to resume Saturday for the first time since the strike against the St. Louis began Monday night. Members of the 10 other Post unions have refused to cross the pressmen's picket lines. The walkout also has halted publication of the St. Louis which is printed by the Post under contract. The Post, which has said it is prepared to publish despite the strike, said Thursday the earliest it plans to resume publication is next Monday or Tuesday. In the interim, two groups planned to make announcements today about temporary newspapers. Charles Klntzer. publisher of the St. Louis Journalism Review, and Fred Faust, who owns a typesetting business, called separate news conferences to announce publication next week of newspapers using reporters from the Post and Globe Globe-Democra- t, TONIGHT!
