This rugged man, better known as Eric the Red, had been exiled from Iceland for 3 years for killing a man. Eric spent his exile exploring the western land that had been described to him by Icelandic sailors. Three years later he returned to Iceland and told the people about his explorations. He wanted people to go back with him and establish settlements. So, in order to make the island more attractive to them, he named it Greenland. In the summer of 985 or 986, 25 boatloads of people with all their livestock and possessions left Iceland for the new land. Only 14 ships reached the southwestern coast of the island. The people settled in two areas and eventually about 4,000 of them lived there. By the way, the climate in Greenland was niuch milder then than it is today. They were able to raise livestock and crops.
