WILSON, Pastor Evangelical Free Church of Orem - Psychology plays a very definite and fundamental role in the world today. It is used in commercials throughout the spectrum of public communications because of its effectiveness in suggesting to the consumer despite resisterice. In fact it is recognized that effort to resist actually plays a part in achieving the purpose of the commer- cial. The late Dr. Emile Cou'e discovered a law of reversed effort which states that the greater the effort to consciously overcome suggestion by the will, the greater will be to the second power, the strength Bishop Neil R. Cardon, and Gary Arnold Barnes, second counselor. Polling Talks About Obtaining Comfort By David Poling It is apparent that conversion may as well as happen in and with a group the solitary study of one's mind. Mass meetings and evangelistic services have been very effective in Christian and very suspect. The record history of the great evangelists is one of the unique stories for the Chris, .an church and certainly a rich episode in American history. Critics of sawdust trail conversions usually point to the crowd emotionalism, the forces of group pressure, the sensations of a moment which may fade in the cool reflection of tomorrow. That is all correct and proper to report. Yet thousands of people do find exa satisfying and perience in mass meetings of every kind: the theater, rock concerts, sporting events and political convenwith tions. Life is filled, even satur-.temass gatherings and crowd participation it must then be up to the individual to validate and express the convictions and truths absorbed. People often share a conversion ex perience when faced with a dramatic 178. T11K 11KRAI.D. If you flirt with love, you could get into trouble, fellows! What has taken us hundreds of years to learn today God has tried to tell us bv certain warnings in of So choice that deals with reality. In 1899 the Great Blizzard of the 19th century really smacked Colorado. Between January 30 and February 20 more than half the herds froze to death in that region. In the village of Hunter's Pass, 19 miles from Aspen, miners and their families finally ran out of food and fuel. A decision was made and the next morning the town evacuated, the people making their way to Aspen on 75 skis. Women and pairs of home-mad- e children rode on the backs of the men. And they found safety by evening, without loss of life. They did it all they faced the same reality together and made a community decision that secured life. There is comfort in a crowd, there is satisfaction in sharing the triumphs of and the inspiration of a a home-teareligious event. But those things which finally last and prevail, must be confirmed in our own hearts. True conversion for Christians is honest, individual ownership of the Faith, shared with a living fellowship. The Rev. David Poling, NEA Religion Contributor, is author of "Why Billy Graham?" the Bible. This morning literally thousands of people will pick up the papers across the nation and turn to the horoscope section first. They will be relaxed - not quite awake - and read their activities for the day. By the mere suggestion of what the day holds in store for them, they will begin to experience it. The palm reader will determine the destiny of the unwary just on the basis of the creases in the palm. Thousands of people will trust their fate to the flip of a Tarrot card Many will be enslaved by the mere arrangement of left over tea leaves. The gradual acceptance of practices today widely practiced are clearly condemned by the Bible. In Leviticus 19:31 God said, "Regard not them that have familiear spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I Am the Lord your God." Lev. 20:6 states: "And the soul that iurneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to awhoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people." Isaiah 8: 19 declares, "And when they shall say unto you, seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead( (In other words, why seek unto the dead concerning the living?) God classifies all occult practices under witchcraft n or divination, Lord thv God doth drive them out from before themselves three." stating that it detiles those who open it' We are to trust God only' reads. He admonishes us to heed the words of Romans 1:22, "Professing themselves to be wise, they 16. "They profess that became fools."
