Show Tuesday, March 8, 1977, THE HERALD, Provo, fe Me Why I'L ABfJER SHORTRIBS Frank By Hill hair, there are certain cells that contain pigment, or coloring matter. When they move upward with the growing hair shaft they die and the granules of pigment which they had are left in the hair. The honsubstance of the hair itself is yellow. The pigment granules are all shades of brown, from a reddish color to a deep The color of the horny material and the pigment granules mingle, and this is what gives us all the shades of hair we know, from blond to black. One explanation for the appearance of grey hair is that age and disease (or shock or worry) cause less pigment to be deposited in the hair. So the color becomes grey. Another explanation is that air cavities or bubbles begin to appear, and these air bubbles replace the pigment granules. We know that nervous excitement, worries, and sorrow can cause these air bubbles to appear among the hair cells and make the hair look grey. But why and how this happens, we still don't know. yoRBVALooeLEjriiusr z ArMCPT- - M ) ." We know that shock and nervous disorders and old age bring on grey hair, but exactly why and how this happens is still not fully known. A hair is a growing - down of the skin. It strikes root there, and then shoots upward. As the hair cells rrw.-out and away from the skin they change into a horny material. On the outside surface of the hair, the cells become flattened and lie on top of one another like shingles.
