CARAS Herald Staff Writer "When you are tired of London you are tired of the world," or so said Samuel Johnson many years ago. Statistics used by the Mormon Church in England state that almost 80 percent of the population of Utah can trace their ancestory back to the shores of England. Whether those figures are correct or not, the fact is that every year England is a favorite vacation spot for those Utahns who head for Europe. England is a country of rolling green hills and slow meandering rivers. Its villages are topped with thatched roofs and lined with cobblestone streets. The countryside is bordered with fences made of prickly hedges and gray stone fences. And within those fences are the wooly fleeced sheep and the cattle that provide the base for steak and kidney pie. But London isn't England and it never has been. What London is , is the world in embyro. Thousands of years ago London was Londi-niuthe farthest outpost of the empire of Ceasar and Rome. Before that it was a village of the Celts and once the Koman empire fell it became the capital of the Saxons and then the Normans. The city has always been home to those who speak English and an equall number of those who don't. The streets of London are filled with the scents of India, China, Arabia, Greece, Spain, Italy, Israel and Africa. You name it our want it and you can find it in London. But London is also a city of tradition and you can find plenty to remind you of the days when Britannia ruled the waves. The road to Buckingham Palace is painted a brilliant red and the round court in front is centered d statue of Queen with a Victoria. The palace is fronted by a balcony and on special occasions the royal family stands and waves to the thousands gathered below. From Buckingham Palace you are within walking distance of Big Ben, Westminister Abby and he Houses of Parliment. The walk can be through the gardens that once belonged only to royalty and the way they are kept up would hint that that is still the case. gold-leafe- don is filled with it. Every night of the year you can travel to the dozens of theaters and enjoy the worlds best plays, musicals and dramas. Besides theater there is always ballet and opera with some of the beside in the world being performed by the royal companies. London is not one of the cheapest cities to stay in but the return you get is the statisfaction of knowing you have just spent time city in in the most distinguished the world. (a subsidiary of Children's Television Workshop) and CCTV (China Central Television, the Chinese national television network), in association with NBC Entertain- From the base of Big Ben tourists can get on a boat and head west up the Thames River to Hampton Court and Windsor Castle. The trip southeast down the river will take you past St. Paul's Cathiedral and to the Tower of London. Riding along in the boat you can almost imagine what the city was like anciently when Viking ships trolled the waters of the Thames.
