Show Friday, September Pavi Phone fj A study made by the American Telegraph and Telephone Co. claims that a typical manufacturing worker in 1932 had to work 77 minutes at his job to make enough money to pay for a month's local telephone service. The study indicates that even in the face of inflation, today's telephone customer actually uses less of his time on the job to earn money for telephone service. In 1940, the study indicates, a worker had to work at his job six hours to pay for a month's telephone service. The relative cost of telephone service this year is nearly 30 percent less than 10 years ago, claims Ken Hill, a spokesman for Mountain Bell. The 77 minutes needed this year for a month's local phone service is one Creeper HEBER CITY-- A special evening trip excursion on the Heber Creeper has been added to the Labor Day schedule, according to Monte R. Bona, station manager. Bona explained that this holiday weekend usually has more requests for train seating than can be accomodated. However, this year, beginning Saturday and continuing through Mon round minute more than in 1981, and that slight rise marks the first time in nearly 30 years the relative cost has not declined according to the AT&T The first year of the AT&T study was 1940. Information relates to the same cities included by the Bureau of Labor Statstics to determine the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Seven of the 95 cities are in Mountain Bell's territory. The one Utah city included in the study is Logan. According to AT&T, this year's rise in work time needed to pay for local service reflects moderations of wage increases because of the recession and a faster increase in local phone service charges than in recent years The study attributes the rise in local lS-i- A 25 For those who would like to eat as they watch the famous Wasatch Front scenery roll by, box lunches can be ordered by calling either or There is a charge for the lunches. But, says Dr. Harvey Black, a professor of instructional science, preparation must begin early before the baby is born or as soon afterward as possible. Black has directed the Infant Print Fluency research project for the past three years. He said parents who take the class, offered through BYU Confer- ences and Workshops, will design their own family's approach to "infant and lifelong academics." sesThe eight two-hosions in the course can be taken for one or two hours of academic credit. They will begin Sept. 16 and continue each Thursday night, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., through Nov. 4. The cost for one hour of credit is $20; for two hours of credit, it's $30. Other factors are the Bell System effort to price local service more in line with its actual cost, and the move to speed up the capital recovery processs. That action was recently sanctioned by federal regulatory agencies. Fewer hours of work are required now than in for other commodities and services, too, but the cost of telephone service has risen substantially less throughout the period than the average consumer prices. The higher productivity of the Bell System than the economy as a whole is the reason for the slower rise, according 3, 1982, UNIVERSITY MALL |
