According to BYU coach Tim Powers, being mentally ready to swim early in the morning will be crucial. "We begin the meet Thursday at 9 a.m. at the San Diego State outdoor pool," says Powers. "It has been rainy there this week and cold. It will be critical that we be mentally ready to swim early and under any condition." Favored University of Utah will return its full 1980 conference championship team but should receive stiff competition from the Cougars and University of Hawaii. The Rainbows have a number of swimmers who redshirted last year after winning championships in other conferences. Five of BYU's top six swimmers are freshmen but all have the experience and talent necessary to win individual titles. Freshman sensation Paul Johnson could capture the 200 Meter Butterfly and go on to status says Powers. Along with Johnson, first-yea- r swimmers Wayne Collard, Juha Kaartinen. Roger Ormsby, and Gary Reynolds should add a number of points to the Cougar total. The only returning WAC champion from last year's Cougar squad is senior Chris Smith. Jazz Coach Tom Nissalke didn't think so. "We played pathetic tonight. I didn't think it was a good overall effort on our part. We have to play at 90 percent of our potential to win. and tonight we didn't even come close to that." The veteran-lade- n Bullets have an average of eight NBA seasons under the belts of their starting lineup, led by Elvin Hayes and Wes Unseld with 12 seasons each. The Jazz meanwhile have only a two season average among its starters, and the difference shows. Elvin Hayes did a real number on the leagues leading scorer, Utah's Adrian Pantley. Dantley was only able to muster 21 points, but more importantly, shot a miserable nine of 24 from the field and only three of 9 from the foul line. "The real important thing in the game tonight was Elvin's defensive job on Dantley," said Washington Coach Gene Shue. " Dantley was struggling to get inside and had to rely on his outside shooting, which wasn't all that great." With Dantley pretty much shut down, the Jazz next looked to rookie Darrell Griffith for scoring, but he too was having an off night. Griffith canned only eight of 20 shots in garnishing 17 points. A bright spot for the Jazz was rookie sparkplug Carl Nicks. He hit for a career high 14 points and dished out six assises in playing another great game for Utah. "Nicks is getting better and better every game he plays. His recent outings have been excellent," Nissalke commented. The loss was the third in a row for the Jazz and the 19th loss in their last 23 outings. "We have no leadership on this team," Nissalke lamented. "l ook at Washington. They have two inspirational leaders in Unseld and Hayes. And they have a team fioor general in Porter. That's where we are lacking. There is nobody on our squad who will really take charge. Porter had 14 assists to go with his 23 points. That's 51 points that he was directly responsible for. Now that's a leader." he said. , 4 2 3 10 Sore son 2 4 4 1 Zenger 39 Spring Savings for men 20 85-6- 17- -tJ 220.3024 none 60-4- 18. 1 Lehi Frankenberrv 7 4 5 It. Smith, however, has the best conference time this year. In the diving competition the Cougars should fare quite well. Among six divers entered. Casey Jones and Ricardo Velarde have both placed high in the last two WAC championships. According to Powers the Cougars, though young, are well seasoned. "We purposely scheduled four or five meets against top ten teams who would beat us," says Powers. "This, however, gave our young swimmers top quality, pressured experience early. 11 2-- 32 85-6- 9 as Snow grabbed a 4 lead with five minutes left in the half The lead increased to 14 at half time the Badgers led 2 with nine minutes left in the game The Wolverines finally uncorked the basket in the final minutes and used a zone-tra- p press to pull within ten with five minutes to go Guard Pat Sorenson led the charge, scoring alt of his eight points in a four minute streak iTc itt 7 2 By ROGER D.
