October NEW YORK (UPI) One industry in which the family company continues to thrive is the wine trade. In Europe vineyards and wineries may stay in a single family for many generations. Even in America, sons tend to follow fathers in the business, partly because wine always has been a prestigious commerce with many firms priding themselves on high ethical traditions. A case in point is Villa Banfi USA at Farmingdale N.Y. Although it rather shuns the limelight Villa Banfi says it is the country's largest wine importer and that it may bring in from Italy this year more wine than France and Germany combined export to the United States. As wine companies go, Villa Banfi isn't exactly ancient. It was founded in 1919 by John Mariani Sr., whose two sons, John and Harry, run it now. The elder Mariani got into wine in a most unusual way. Born in Connecticut of immigrant parents he was sent to Milan to be educated by his mother's sister, who was head of the household staff of Cardinal Ratti. later to become Pope Pius XI. Both the Cardinal and young Mariani's aunt were wine connoisseurs. Young Mariani was smart enough to realize that by observing the Cardinal and his aunt in their choice and treatment of wines he could acquire the knowledge to make a career for himself. So, soon after his return to America, he started a wine importing firm. He named the firm Banfi for his aunt. It prospered and grew steadily and he sent his two sons to prestigious universities, John to Cornell and Harry to Colgate. The sons took over the business in 1964. It was an auspicious time and the sons were prepared to take advantage of that. Americans were swinging away from hard liquors towards wine. Wine was even making gains at the expense of beer. More importantly, the Italian wine industry, with which the Marianis were intimately connected, was capturing dominance in the Anerican market from French, German and Spanish wines. Even today, if you mention imported inwines to the average formed American, he probably will say French wines hold the top place in the market but he's dead wrong. Italy is the country that supplies most of the U.S. market. The Marianis say there are several reasons for this. One is that the Italians have borrowed some of the marketing strategies of the huge California wine industry, which is the real dominant factor in the overall U.S. market, while the French and Germans have insisted on sticking to old fashioned., not very efficient, methods. The result, John Mariani says, is that prices of French and German wines shot up as fast or faster than the inflation of the dollar while the rise in the prices of imported Italian wines was restrained much as were the rising prices of American wines. Villa Banfi also imports French, German, Swiss and Austrian wines but its big business is in Italian wines. The Italian w,ne industry has done some other smart things and the Marianis have been involved. While a lot of Italy's tens of thousands of vineyards still market their crops individually they have formed many big and highly successfull cooperatives to improve cultivation of grapes and create new brands. Villa Banfi represents one of the biggest of these Riunite which is a federation of 9 000 small wine growers who produce white, red and rose wines under the coop's name. Moreover, many of these wines are tailored so to speak to suit American taste. For years, the French and Germans sneered at Americans for chilling table wines. Instead, the Italians, like the California wineries, set to work to produce wines that were ideal for serving chilled since Americans seemed to want them that way, and Riunite was in the forefront of that trend. Italy also has the advantage of a more equable climate it doesn't have "bad years" as often as the more northern countries. John and Harry Mariani first visited the Riunite vineyards and winery 14 years ago and decided these wines could have a tremendous appeal on the U.S. market. They ordered 200 cases. Last year, they sold two million cases and this year the demand is so high they doubt if they will be able to get enough wine from Italy to meet it. Although the Marianis say they handled about half of Italy's exports of 17.23 million gallons of wine to the U.S. in the first half of 1980, still there are scores of other firms, some big and some small, in the business. The Marianis think overall imports of wine into the United States are going to keep on growing but unlike the automobile business, the California wineries won't be hurt, they said. The California wine business is too well run and overall, wine is making too big gains at the expense of hard liquor. The Marianis are enthusiastic practitioners of improved wine making technology as well as better marketing strategy. For example, they have been working with vintners to get the sulfur dioxide content of wine further reduced. Sulfur dioxide has been used as a disinfectant in wine since ancient Roman times. "But even a little too much of it can cause wine to give you a headache," said John Mariani. "For that and other reasons, we preach using only natural methods in making wines, no chemical processes." The Marianis now are going into wir ; production as well as marketing.
