Show NonSmokers Inhale Polluted Air Equal ToZPacks of Cigarettes Music For Chasing Bugs Seen THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, 1956 -As-- in sume A World Without Bugs By HENRY GOODMAN Cambridge, I new Mass.- -A chemical compound makes it! possible, in theory, to kill all. the insects in the world. The trouble is that most flow-- : ering plants would die out, too. They depend on bees, butter- flies and other insects for pollination. Large numbers of r, fish also birds and wSuld perish for lack of food. The general relationships among all living things would be thrown violently out of, fresh-wate- kilter. Simple Process The new compound is the discovery of Dr. Carrol M. Williams, Harvard University biologist and Dr. John H. Law, now of the University of Chi cago. It can be mad in a relap process tively simple from common chemicals. At is least one manufacturer techworking on production niques. The idea, however, would not be to spread the material for the wholesale killing of all insects, but to use it carefully on stored products. As Dr. Williams points out, we keep millions of bushels of grains in storage and insects eat these in two-ste- large quantities. Unlike DDT, and other modern insect controls, the new compound is a fatty substance that is completely harmless i to man or any other animal. It can be applied to foods with perfect safety. Because the substance is essential to their development, insects never can acquire imit. munity or resistance . to This, alont with it harmiess- ness to other, animals, makes it an ideal insecticide. Dr. Williams, and other biologists and chemists are working on related compounds that will, Dr. Williams is convinced, lead to similar chemicals which would kill only certain insects. Fortunate Accident Through a fortunate accident, Dr. Williams and a cola league recently discovered compound that works only on one species of insect. It is in use already with great success .against the red cotton bug of India. This voracious pest consumes up to half the cotton crop in some parts of India. The compounds act like the "juvenile hormone" of insects. This hormone prevents young insects in the larva stage from lt reaching the pupa or stage in their development until they are ready. Just before each growth they complete stage, little insects stop producing the hormone. pre-adu- Fails To News Policy NEW' YORK (UPI) Smug color special, "Air of Disaster? eventually nuclear energy and certain cities which the network will cany natural gas even though this WASHINGTON (UPI may not realize it but public Oct. 2. would mean higher rates to the WASHINGTON (UPI) -T-he for illustrationpurposes health authorities who has consumer, Sander estimate Vanocur, they in the that you are out of the U.S. Information director are inhaling polluted 'air equalbeen investigating the problem, -people must be ready and backyard barbecuing an aard. to a (USIA) or . two of . The embryo grows and grows inside the egg, but it cannot emerge as a baby bug or larva. When a larva is in contact with even a minute quantity of the cannot change compound, into a "teen-age- " bug or pupa. If the pupa is exposed to it, no adult emerges. Even grasshoppers and other insects that don't go through this complete cycle do not become adults in the presence of the hormone or the compound. Dr. Williams explains that the hormone is essential to the insect, but if it is present at the wrong time, the insect gets a wrong signal and development goes off the rails. The discovery of the hormone mimicking compound is the result of more than 10 years of investigation. Neither the juvenile hormone nor the artificial compound has been purified sufficiently for chemical analysis. But both have been ex tracted enough so they work in minute quantities. . it' STOP I TfJr ' , gcki. M, Black letthar upper. Guaranteed - - j. LiWe boy ies 9 .. (b) Slip-o- n In black Iwthtr.
